Monday. Strong wind, good dirt, and an incoming taste of summer.

2015-04-05_10-09-59 M=C-Edit
It rained on Mt. Hood for a little while last night, and then the rain switched to snow. Unfortunately, it didn’t precipitate enough to drop more than a trace of new on the ground. We will see continued snow flurries today and tonight, alternating with breaks in the weather. The snow level will be 3500′ all day. Looks like we’ll see maybe .1” water value, for an inch of new snow. The bummer thing about this is that we had corn snow over the last few days. The addition of a little bit of new snow will make conditions quite sticky for the next couple of days as the weather warms up again. Wind today will be W 30 all day long. Continued after the chart.

Wind Tuesday will be NW 25 in the first half of the day and N 20-25 in the afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast

The westerlies were already blowing as of 5am, driven by a west gradient of .07 (pdx-dls) and .09 (dls-psc). That was giving us 13-18 from Stevenson to Maryhill with 25-29 in the Arlington area. The wind in the western Gorge today depends on the clouds, so let’s call it gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River all day, with stronger, but still gusty wind possible in the afternoon if the sky clears. Mosier’s a question mark today, sitting near the edge of the cloud line, so you’ll have to watch the sky to determine if that’s your place. From Rowena to Threemile, you can expect the wind to rise to 28-32 after 1pm or so. Models do suggest a brief lull between 11am and 2pm, so don’t let dropping numbers during that period keep you from driving. High pressure building off the coast early in the afternoon will cause the wind to pick back up.

Looking at tomorrow, high pressure takes over the region, knocking down the gradients. Still, we’ll have W 10-13 through the entire Gorge right off the bat, probably holding in that 10-13 range all day long, wherever you look. Wednesday starts off light and variable and ends up E 5-10. Thursday looks like E 20-25.

If the models are correct about Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we’re looking at three days of 25-29+. Those models, given Murphy’s Law, are likely correct; I have a training in Portland those three days, so it would only make sense if it were nuking windy each day this weekend!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m a bit of an existentialist when it comes to my therapeutic theoretical orientation. In other words, part of what I believe is that we need to find a purpose in life. By purpose, I don’t mean goals. I mean something that doesn’t have an endpoint. With a purpose, we feel fulfilled and nurtured, at least on some levels.

Take money, for example. When I was much younger, I dated someone who had a plan to make a billion dollars by age 40. That’s a goal. A purpose might involve making as much money as possible. Whether that’s a fulfilling purpose or not is up for debate. I’d argue that we need to find a purpose that fills our needs and also gives back to us in a nurturing way.

For example, if you believe your purpose is to teach, and by teaching for X hours a week you feel fulfilled and full, and you don’t seek more and more opportunities to teach, you’ve found a meaningful life purpose. If, however, the thing you’ve picked as your purpose leaves you craving more and more of that thing, it’s time to examine that purpose closely.

Take a moment and see if you have a purpose, if there’s something that’s providing you with grounding nurturing. And if you can’t identify your purpose, see what you’re doing instead. Are you filling your life to the brim with activities? Are you constantly on the move? Are you filling the empty moments with pints of microbrew and bowls of the newest strain from your local pot shop? None of these things are wrong. They’re just different ways of approaching life. But if you can find a purpose and cultivate it, you’ll find happiness from within and the ability to sit still and be peaceful. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s fantastic dirt out there today at Post (unless it starts raining after I post this, which seems likely!), Whoopdee, Syncline, Hospital, Gorge 400 and Kitchen Sink. Post Canyon is snow-free to the top of the old Super D course, but not to the top of Dirt Surfer. I’d like to remind you that dogs are NOT ALLOWED on Hospital Hill right now. That means you, even you. No dogs. If you bring your dog on private land against the landowners’ wishes, you are risking access for everyone. If you’re thinking about road biking, go early today, because the wind will pick up as the day goes on. Light to moderate westerlies accompany your pavement tomorrow, and Wednesday looks epic on the pavement with light wind and temps nearing 80.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, the start of the work and school week for many of us. If you’re lucky enough that you can be free at 1pm, there’s free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall. For those of you who aren’t free until this evening, there’s community yoga at Samadhi at 6pm, community Zumba at 6:30pm at the Parkdale Community Center, and there’s Aikido at Trinity Natural Medicine at 6pm. Coming up tomorrow, there’s pickup touch rugby at the Waterfront Park at 5:30, community yoga at Flow at 4:30, $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5pm to 9pm, and community meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samahdi at 6:30pm.

Have an awesome day today!
