Sunday. Just a little rain, and then more summer.

Looks like we’re going to start off the day with some high clouds over Mt. Hood. If they’re here now, they probably aren’t going anywhere, as we’re expecting a weather system to move in tonight. So, expect partly cloudy, overcast sky today, becoming increasingly cloudy this afternoon and evening, followed by rain tonight. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ all day, dropping to a snow level of 5500′ by 2am Monday and 2500′ by 5am Monday. We’ll see approximately .3-.4” water value of rain (with maybe a trace of snow at the back end) between 11pm today and 5am Monday. Wind today will be W 10-15 early, turning to SSW 20 this afternoon and becoming WSW 40 after midnight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Monday starts off clear. Orographic snow flurries develop during the day and taper off in the evening. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. We’ll see less than .2” WV in the daytime flurries for less than 2” of new snow. Widn on Monday will be W 40 in the morning, fading just a bit to W 30 mid-morning, and holding at least until midnight.

Tuesday looks partly cloudy with a few snow flurries possible in the morning and sunshine likely late in the afternoon. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning and 8000′ in the afternoon. Wind Tuesday will be NW 20-25 in the morning and N 30 in the afternoon.

Looking ahead to Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll have sunshine and very warm weather on the mountain with temps likely climbing into the 60’s at 5000′. Yes, I said 60’s. That’s warm!

Gorge Wind Forecast

I saw quite a few kites out on the river yesterday and heard quite a few people talking about windsurfing and kiteboarding. Looks like the season has started! Today, however, looks like more of a casual standup paddling day. You can expect light wind all day long. River water temp is 47 degrees.

Monday starts off windy and stays that way all day as a weather system moves off to the east and high pressure builds off the coast. This is a pretty good setup. The strongest, steadiest wind will be east of the clouds, which will likely push to Mosier. So, expect 25-29 to start from Mosier east to Arlington. After noon, we’ll have 28-32 from Mosier to Threemile. It’s tricky to say what will happen in the western Gorge. I suspect we’ll have gusty, showery 17-22 from Stevenson to Bingen in the morning with steadier 17-22 in the afternoon. If you do make the drive out to the eastern Gorge, keep your eyes peeled for bighorn sheep east of John Day Dam. I saw four flocks on my way home from Arlington last week.

Tuesday looks like W 5-10 near Hood River all day. Wednesday looks like E 10-15 at Rooster. Thursday looks like E 15-20.

Random Morning Thoughts

It took me extra time to write the forecast this morning because I was making cookie dough at the same time. One part of me was making cookies for my therapy skills practice group tomorrow, one part of me was making it so I could eat cookie dough for breakfast, and one part of me was busily shaming myself for wanting to eat cookie dough when I’m trying to drop the 5-8 pounds that I’m carrying from all those calories contained in grad school credits. It’s not the cookies, by the way. It’s grad school credits – there are 671 calories in each credit hour.

Anyway, we all have various voices that live within us – these voices represent our competing needs. Much as we need to balance our relationships with the people outside of us, we need to balance our relationships with the voices that live within us. We try, most of us anyway, to be nice to the people in other bodies, but we sure can be hard on ourselves and our many needs and voices.

And just as we reap what we sow with others – when we are mean, people will not be nice to us – we are better served being kind to the many aspects of ourselves. After all, if we are mean to one of our internal parts, that part will be mean to the rest of the parts in return. So, when you find yourself speaking to yourself in an unkind way, see if you can invoke some compassion toward both the unkind voice and the part of you that feels agitated by it. Compassion’s not a cure-all, but it certainly feels better than shame, anger or fury. Be nice to others. Be nice to yourself. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

There’s just a touch of high overcast to start your Sunday. We’ll see filtered sun during the day with increasing clouds this afternoon and rain after 10:30pm or so. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 60’s to low 70’s this afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Monday starts off showery. Those showers will decrease as the day goes on, leaving us with partly cloudy or sunny sky in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Strong west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Tuesday may start off partly cloudy but should be sunny by the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. Looking ahead to Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be in the 70’s, possibly even the 80’s. Whoa. That’s right in record territory.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s fantastic dirt out there today at Post, Whoopdee, Syncline, Hospital, Gorge 400 and Kitchen Sink. I’d like to remind you that dogs are NOT ALLOWED on Hospital Hill right now, and that applies to the people I saw getting ready to ride with dogs yesterday. In other friendly reminders, you have two opportunities to give back to the trails today: 9am at Family Man for a HRATS work party and 9am at the Whoopdee. Your trails need you as much as you need them, so go work on them! In road biking news, today looks awesome: light wind and warm weather. Monday looks wicked windy. Tuesday looks warm and sunny with light west wind.

Upcoming Events

The Gorge Gravel Grinder and the Gorge Roubaix are today out in The Dalles. The HRATS have a 9am trail work party at Family Man, and Steve Dunn has a trail work party at 9am at the Whoopdee Trail. In yoga land, the by-donation classes today are 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s free community meditation at 11am at Flow Yoga. Coming up this afternoon, there’s pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School and Ping Pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm.

Have an awesome day today!
