Sunday. First day of spring!

2015-03-20_10-37-58 M=C-Edit
It’s the first day of spring on the slopes of Mt. Hood, and the weather will be decidedly spring-like today. Expect clouds this morning with precip picking up by 11am. The snow level today will be 8000′ early, 7000′ when the precip hits, and 4500′ this evening after the precip has pretty much ended. We’ll see .3” water value (WV) between the start of the rain and 5pm, and then we’ll see another .2” or less tonight. That last .2”, well, some of it may fall as snow, for less than 2” of new and likely less than 1” of new snow. Wind today will be SW 10 early, picking up to SSW 15 midday and SW 20-25 after 5pm. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Sunday morning is starting off with light east wind in the 10-15 range at both Stevenson and Rooster. The wind will continue unabated until this afternoon, late this afternoon, when we’ll see a switch to W 10-13 after 5pm. Monday starts off with very light east wind, or no wind at all. After 2pm, we’ll see the wind switch to W 13-16 from Stevenson all the way east to Arlington.

Tuesday actually looks like a pretty good setup, with high pressure off the coast and low pressure in the desert. We’ll see westerlies at 12-15 from Viento to Arlington to start the day, picking up to relatively steady W 23-26 from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon. Looking way out into the not-safe-to-forecast time frame, Thursday looks like a Classic Gorge Setup. If nothing changes, that will be my opening day for the season. Fingers crossed. Current flow is 147kcfs, meaning Maryhill is the place to watch…

Random Morning Thoughts

The RMTs have not been doing a very good job of taking spring break off. They said they would, and I’m going to ask them to stick to that promise today. The RMTs just went back to bed, and are enjoying some well-deserved extra hours of sleep. Have an awesome day. =)

Gorge Weather Forecast

I stepped outside to look at the weather this morning, and I only spotted one lonely star. I can draw two conclusions from this. One, there’s only one star left. Two, it’s mostly cloudy. The first, while containing the possibility for a good science fiction story, is probably not the truth. It’s more likely that there are clouds between us here on Earth and the stars out in space. Expect a cloudy morning, then, with rain starting up by noon. Partly cloudy sky returns after 5pm, with a good possibility of a pretty sunset. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the mid 50’s this afternoon. Light wind. 67% chance of rainbows.

Monday looks cloudy and rainy for much of the day, with partly cloudy sky and showers in the afternoon. Temps will be right around 40 early and in the low 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate west wind in the afternoon. 97% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks partly cloudy and showery all day. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I finally got a Post Canyon report yesterday, and the report is the the dirt is perfect from Family Man on up. Down lower, there are still some muddy spots, but the trails are rideable. Seeing as how it’s going to rain today, you’ll want to get it early, because once it rains, Post goes back to too-wet-to-ride. Whoopdee is too muddy in the middle section. Syncline and Hospital are perfect. If you’re road biking today, finish up before noon, because the rain is coming.

Upcoming Events

Today is Spring Demo Day at Mt. Hood Meadows, with free ski and snowboard demos. There’s pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm. There’s also free community meditation at Flow Yoga at 11am.
