It is snowing on Mt. Hood this morning, and shall continue to snow through tomorrow, setting us up for a couple of great days of powder skiing! We’ll see light to moderate snowfall this morning, a break midday with a chance of some sunshine, and then we’ll see a round of heavy snowfall starting this afternoon around 4pm. The snow level will be around 1000′ all day today. We’ll see .1-.2” water value (WV) this morning before the break, for 1-2” of new snow. We’ll see another .8” or so tonight, for 8-10” of new by 4am Friday. Wind today will be WSW 20 early, backing off to SW 15 after noon. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Tomorrow starts off snowy, sees sunshine, mid-level clouds, and some fog midday, and then sees another round of precip after midnight. The snow level Friday will be less than 1000′ for much of the day, with temps warming after midnight, but probably keeping the precip snow until Saturday morning. We’ll see .3-.4” WV during the day, mostly before noon, for 3-4” of new snow. We’ll see another round of precip hit around midnight, for .5” by 4am Friday. That will likely be wet snow, 2-4”, but may contain other forms of wintry precip the further we advance into Saturday. Wind Friday will be W 35 early, backing off to W 15 in the afternoon and SW 20 overnight.

See below for details.
Saturday morning may start with snow, but will likely see a switch to rain midday and a switch back to snow in the afternoon before the sky clears in the evening. The snow level will be 6000′ early, rising to 7000′ mid-morning, falling to 5000′ by noon and 4000′ in the evening. We’ll see 1-1.5” WV mixed precip in the 4am to 4pm period.
Sunday’s a big maybe right now. The models predict a round of moderate precip between 4am and noon with the snow level somewhere between 4000′ and 6500′. So… let’s wait a bit and see what the models say tomorrow.

Random Morning Thoughts
I was sitting in class last night listening to a conversation about the rupture-repair cycle in relationships. I’m pretty obsessed with rupture-repair, but that’s a different topic. This particular conversation was regarding what to do when you make a verbal faux pas or have a disagreement. Class consensus was that it’s important to accept responsibility for the part we play in hurting another person. Interactions are bi-directional, and we each play a part in every interaction.
In other words, rather than saying, “I’m sorry you misinterpreted me,” or “You’re too sensitive,” we need to empathize with the person and accept responsibility for our part, rather than blaming. Sometimes this is difficult. It feels like a blow to our ego. Or it feels like we’re sacrificing our position on the right/wrong spectrum. We feel like we lose when we accept responsibility for the part we played in another person’s upset.
Assigning responsibility, however, is not the same as assigning blame. And the right/wrong spectrum, when applied to interpersonal interactions, can do a lot of damage. Saying, “I’m sorry I played a part in this,” merely recognizes that ruptures happen as a result of the varying perceptions of two people. Miscommunication, in other words. Accepting some responsibility and exploring what happened, rather than taking a defensive stance, allows you to come back into connection with the human being you’re in conflict with. It’s not easy, but it’ll make your life and relationships richer. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
The next 48 hours present a very tricky forecast period for the Gorge, as temps drop into the “mixed wintry precipitation” range all the way down to river level. This forecast represents my best guess, with a bias towards safety. That said, we’ll see rain this morning, sprinkles midday, and heavy mixed precipitation after 4pm through Friday morning. Temps will be in the upper 30’s this morning, low 40’s this afternoon, and a couple degrees above freezing tonight. That means the after-4pm round of precip will likely be a sleet/wet snow/rain mix, with sticking snow above 1000′. East wind. 97% chance of rainbows.
Tomorrow morning sees a continuation of that mixed precip through noon, with clouds after that and another round of precip after midnight. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Models disagree on temps Friday night through Saturday morning, and that’s making the forecast very difficult. My best guess is that we’ll see snow switching to freezing rain above 1000′ Friday night after midnight with mixed wintry precip below 1000′. The worst case scenario model, however, has freezing rain and sticking snow all the way to river level Friday night. East wind. 14% chance of rainbows.
Saturday morning is also quite tricky. Models are saying anything between 28 degrees and 36 degrees Saturday morning. So… yeah… heavy precip will fall between 4am and 4pm Saturday followed by cloudy sky overnight. Best case scenario at river level is rain. Worst case scenario is freezing rain. The upper valleys are likely to get hit with heavy freezing rain on Saturday. East wind. 9% chance of rainbows.

What’s not snowy is muddy. What’s not muddy is under snow. Your best bet is road biking or gravel grinding.
