Tuesday. Last day of summer. Make the most of it!

I expected we’d see westerlies in the teens this morning, but when I woke up, it was already blowing in the low 20’s at Swell. It’s that fall thing again, happening on the last day of summer: the weather models just aren’t as accurate this time of year. That said, the 6am gradients were .09…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

I expected we’d see westerlies in the teens this morning, but when I woke up, it was already blowing in the low 20’s at Swell. It’s that fall thing again, happening on the last day of summer: the weather models just aren’t as accurate this time of year. That said, the 6am gradients were .09 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc), and models are predicting the wind to pick up today. So, let’s call it 17-21 this morning from Swell to Mosier with gusty, up-and-down 24-27 by midday from Viento to The Dalles with Stevenson joining in at some point. Models say some wind will spread further east late in the day, so let’s call it gusty 22-25 at Rufus and Arlington. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with 10-13 and picks up to 13-16 or a touch more in the afternoon as a weather system approaches the coast. Your best chance of getting on the water tomorrow will likely be Stevenson, but the wind should fill in as far east as Mosier by the afternoon.

See below for details.

Expect light wind to start the day on Thursday as gradients relax across the Cascades. As a weather system approaches in the evening, you can expect gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Friday looks like gusty 23-26, but to tell the truth, models are pretty inconsistent from Friday on out, so it’s really more guessing than anything else.

Out on the coast, expect… (north/central/south)… Today: light/10-15/25-30, W swell 4′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: Light S, NW 5′ @ 9. Thursday: light S, W 6′ @ 10.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 10-13. Jones tomorrow, light. Jones Thursday, 12-15. Sauvie’s today, 5-8. Sauvie’s tomorrow, light. Sauvie’s Thursday, light.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine and I were talking yesterday about making decisions using our heads or our hearts. It’s a cliché to say, “Listen to your heart,” and it’s an annoying, woo-woo cliché at that. But listening to our hearts works, and I’ve been trying to understand why.

When we think about a problem, we create stories. Sometimes we create stories with the words “should” and “must” and “have to”. Those are not our stories; those are other people we’ve incorporated into our minds. When we listen to those head-stories, we can get lost in the noise of the needs and desires of others.

If we turn inward, instead, and listen to our bodies, we’ll see our emotional reaction when we think about taking a certain path: sadness, joy, anticipation, excitement, terror… Those feelings are our real reactions to different options. And when we see feelings, we can explore what they’re about. That leads us to understand our reactions to possible options on a very deep level, and allows us to make choices in full awareness.

Try it. Think about an upcoming decision. Look inward and make a list of the feelings. Explore each of those by connecting with it more deeply. Ask yourself, about each feeling, “What’s this about?” And when you have a better understanding of the complexity of the decision you’re contemplating, you can make a choice. From the heart. Fully aware. And whatever you choose, it will be the right choice for you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy out there this morning with a little bit of marine clouds and a little bit of high clouds. The sunrise was colorful, but short-lived. Since it’s partly cloudy now, let’s stick with partly cloudy today as low pressure sits over the Northwest. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Moderate wind early. Strong late. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with temps in the upper 40’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late. Thursday also looks partly cloudy with temps in the upper 40’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Thursday will be muggy with light wind in the morning and moderate late, and it may rain on Friday.

Road and Mountain Biking

A friend of mine and I went up to the 44 Road to “inspect trail conditions” yesterday. It’s still very dusty on 8 Mile and Knebal, but still really fun. Apparently I had my directions mixed up in yesterday’s report: the NORTH end of Surveyor’s is in perfect, tacky shape, not the south end! Anyway… maybe we’ll get some rain on Friday. In the meantime, tomorrow morning and Thursday look great for road biking.

Upcoming Events

If you want to get out and play tonight, there’s pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 6pm, there’s triathlon practice at Mayer Park at 6pm, there’s community meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30, and there’s a free yoga class at the Mosier Senior Center at 7.

Tonight’s community meditation features a visit by Ajahn Pasanno of the Abayaghiri monastery in California. He’s been a monk for 40 years, and will likely have helpful bits of meditation advice to share.

Coming up this Saturday, Northwest Trail Alliance has a fundraiser shuttle day at Sandy Ridge. You’ll need to visit their website and get signed up soon if you’d like a spot. If you’ve never ridden Sandy Ridge, it’s well worth the price of admission for a full day of riding.

There’s another fundraiser on Sunday, and this one’s more local: the Hood River Valley Cross-Country team has a 4 mile run from Kickstand Coffee at 9am on Sunday. Donate whatever you can to the fundraiser – it’ll help cover the cost of kids who want to join the team.

Have an awesome day today!
