There’s nothing but a little breath of a breeze out there this morning, and nothing but a .02 (pdx-dls) gradient to bump the air molecules along on a cross-Cascade journey. Other than a chance at a mid-afternoon, short-lived squall before the rain hits, we’re not going to see much wind at all today. That squall? Well, you’re asking me to predict something nearly unpredictable… low twenties for 60 minutes from HR to Doug’s sometime between 2pm and 5pm? The wind will pick up overnight as a low pressure system moves east of the Cascades… Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
We’ll start off with showers and gusty westerlies at 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier tomorrow. East of there, expect gusty 21-24 early with 25-29 in the afternoon. It’s not an ideal setup – it will be gusty – but you will have a chance to get on the water somewhere between Lyle and Arlington tomorrow afternoon. Inciweb has done a crappy job of updating the Horsethief Butte fire information; last I read elsewhere, SR-14 was open and the fire was 85% contained. Not sure what that says about the amount of smoke at Maryhill, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Random Morning Thoughts
I just bought myself a pair of yellow rain boots. I’ve wanted a pair of yellow rain boots for years. I’m not sure why I waited so long; I guess I have a tendency to only purchase essentials.
My boots are lying in the middle of my living room rug, because I’m so pleased with them that I don’t want to leave them by the front door. I just walked by them, and noticed I had a big shit-eating grin on my face and a feeling of love in my chest. “WTF?” I asked myself, surprised at my intense reaction to a pair of yellow rain boots.
And then it struck me. I bought those rain boots in a moment of love for myself. When I hit “purchase” on PayPal, I was doing a kind, compassionate thing for the little kid in me who’d always wanted those yellow boots. Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying that buying objects can bring you happiness.
I am saying that I believe it’s okay to buy yourself things out of real self-love. The difference is subtle, but profound. It’s the difference between saying, “I want that…” and “I don’t need that, but I’m a lovely human who deserves a gift…” And remember, gifts don’t have to be purchases; they can be stolen moments of quiet in the woods, time curled up with a just-for-fun book, a guilt-free ice cream cone. I think what I’m saying here is this: it’s okay to do nice things for yourself. You deserve it. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.
Gorge Weather Forecast
Because I have a busy, busy day today (how am I ever going to fit grad school into my life?), I’m writing this forecast in the dark. Well, not in the dark. In the time before sunrise, may it be a pretty one, please! You can expect a cloudy day today with a few sprinkles possible early and heavier rain starting sometime between 2pm and 5pm. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. That steady rain shall continue overnight. Light wind. 3% chance of rainbows.
We’ll move into a more showery setup tomorrow with the showers tapering off in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Friday looks partly sunny after a Nothing start. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. The weekend looks partly cloudy to mostly sunny.

Road and Mountain Biking
If you want to get your bike on today, you better do before the afternoon, unless you enjoy riding in the rain. Or… you could take a rest day and go after some tacky dirt late Thursday or early Friday. As for you road bikers, Friday looks AWESOME: partly cloudy with light wind. Me, I’m going to go to Portland and ride to my therapist’s office from Lloyd Center. If the GFS is right, I’ll be doing that in the worst of today’s downpour. I’m about to see how I feel bike commuting in the rain. And I’m about to see how my therapist feels about dripping wet clients. Hah!
