Monday. Wind to the west, fire to the east.

Yesterday, for me, was one of those days where I did a lot more windchasing than windsurfing. Maybe you had a similar experience. If you’d like to repeat that, you can do it again today! We have decent gradients to start the day: .09 (pdx-dls) and .03) dls-psc, but the power of those gradients will…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

We have decent gradients to start the day: .09 (pdx-dls) and .03) dls-psc, but the power of those gradients will be compromised by the approach of a trough of low pressure and a weak frontal system late in the day. Expect somewhat up-and-down westerlies at 19-23 from Viento to Swell this morning with low teens out east. By mid-afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 25-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles, and possibly Rufus too. If you are driving out east, know that SR-14 is currently closed between Dallesport and Maryhill due to the Horsethief Butte Wildfire. That also means you will encounter smokey conditions if you attempt to windsport at the Maryhill section of river. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow looks like a light wind day with westerlies at 5-10 or less in the morning and 10-13 in the afternoon. Therefore, this looks like a nice place for the fish counts: 31254 Chinook, 2400 Steelhead yesterday.

On to Wednesday’s forecast: Light east wind early as an upper low wobbles around off the coast. Light west wind in the afternoon as that low pressure system swings in. Heavy rain.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of my besties and I have been working on a little project trying to get my folks to chip in a little towards my education. When I started this project, I thought, “Oh yeah, I’m empowering myself. This’ll be good for my soul.” After two weeks of back-and-forth, I’m realizing that empowerment wasn’t what I was/am really after.

And that raises an interesting point for me. I’m pretty self-aware, and yet, I had no idea why I was really taking this step. We often don’t understand why we’re doing things, even if we think we do. That can leave us unprepared to deal with the consequences of our actions.

There’s another way of looking at this: our minds are slippery things, and we don’t control them (thanks to a friend of mine for pointing that one out in a way that really hit home). Go ahead, try to stop your thoughts, try to stop your emotions, try to relax all your muscles… you can’t, can you! So, if we can’t control our mind, the best we can do is understand it. And that will leave us better equipped to handle the situations we create.

How do you learn to understand your mind? By watching it (meditation, mindfulness-based therapy, yoga, etc.) Observing a mind is just like observing an animal. After time, you will come to understand the patterns. You will know your mind intimately. And you and your mind will work better together, just as you work better with your cat, dog, partner or children. Have an awesome day with your awesome mind. =)

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s high overcast, and in a surprising twist, I’m feeling comforted by that. I feel cozy, like I want to curl up with a book all day. Instead, I shall work, as shall most of you. But you may still want the weather, so here it is: High overcast and/or cloudy sky all day today with a very, very slight chance of a few sprinkles later on. Moderate to strong wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks partly to mostly cloudy with showers possible after 2pm. Light wind. 13% chance of rainbows. Expect clouds and showers on Wednesday morning with clouds and downpours after 11am. Light wind. 65% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s overcast and cool this morning, and you’ll almost certainly want your arm and leg warmers if you go out to take advantage of the stillness that exists away from the river. Do it early, because the wind will pick up this afternoon. Tomorrow looks like a great road riding day, with partly cloudy weather and light wind. Wednesday looks way too wet, but perhaps we’ll end up with tacky trails after the rain stops Friday?

In other trail news, there was no wildfire at Horsethief Butte when I drove out to the Wall yesterday, but there was a 4000 acre wildfire by the time I came home. It was hard to tell for sure, but it appeared that the fire burned Columbia Hills State Park and the Crawford Oaks so that trail is probably closed right now. I’m waiting to hear back from the ranger. Stand by. Oh, I just looked at something else: according to WSDOT, SR-14 is still closed between Dallesport and Maryhill, so you can’t get to Columbia Hills anyway.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, and that means there are a few events happening: There’s free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1. If that class doesn’t work for you, there’s another free Tai Chi class in Bingen on Thursday evening. There are also two free yoga classes this evening, one at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, and one at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30.

Coming up tomorrow, there’s pickup touch rugby at 6 at the Hood River Marina, Triathlon practice at Mayer Park at 6, community Yoga at the Mosier Senior Center at 7, and a community meditation practice at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. As you may well know, I think that meditation is the bees knees, and I would love it if you came too!

If you’re looking ahead to the end of the week already, there’s a celebration of all things Columbia River at Columbia Center for the Arts on Friday night (movies n’ smoked salmon n’ stuff) Then on Saturday, there’s the Gorge Kids Triathlon, a on-the-water cleanup on the Sandy River, a beach cleanup at Rooster Rock, and a stargazing party at Rooster Rock.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
