Sunday. Is today… The Last Big Day?

Although it wasn’t windy right in Hood River at 7am, it was windy at Swell: mid-twenties to be exact. And the gradients at 6am, well, they were huge: .17 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc) and .61 (eph-dls). With limited weather dynamics to disrupt the current situation, we should see an excellent day on the river today.…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

By late morning, we’ll have 28-32 from Swell to Doug’s (and maybe Viento, if the clouds burn back) with periods of 30+ possible. It’s going to take a while for Stevenson to catch up (pesky clouds), but it should see 22-25 today, eventually. Out at Rufus, you can expect 28-32+ after noon, and Arlington too shall hit 28-32 by mid-afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow looks different than today as an afternoon frontal system affects the day’s wind. Expect 13-16 right off the bat from Viento to Mosier, 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles midday, and gusty, up-and-down 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon. The most reliable place tomorrow will be the Rowena stretch of the river – if you want the Corridor, anticipate and pre-emptively drive.

Expect light wind on Tuesday morning with 10-13 in the afternoon and light wind with rain on Wednesday.

Random Morning Thoughts

Continuing on yesterday’s theme of “the things we see in others”… They (you know, the ubiquitous They) say that the traits we notice in others are the traits we have, or perhaps that those traits are just things we’re sensitive to because of our past experience. I’ve noticed that the traits I like in others are, mostly, traits that I happen to possess.

So, I made a fun little exercise using a word cloud generator. You can do it too, but maybe not today because it’s nuking windy. Maybe on Wednesday when it’s raining. Anyway, make a list of at least 10 people whom you love and admire. For each person, write down at least five characteristics that you like about them. Take the 50+ words you generate and stick them into a word cloud generator.

You’ll end up with a very sweet image of what you find appealing in others, and by extension, what you find appealing in yourself. Or perhaps just the traits you’d like to develop in yourself. Doing this made me smile, and it gave me a lot of insight into myself. Perhaps it will do the same for you. If nothing else, you’ll spend some time reflecting on how much you love your friends and why, and that’s always a good thing! Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We have sunshine, marine clouds west of Viento, and temps in the low 60’s to start the day. Expect temps in the upper 70’s this afternoon with strong wind. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with temps in the upper 50’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. We may see a few sprinkles tomorrow night. Moderate wind early, strong wind late. No rainbows. Wednesday starts off cloudy with temps around 50 and only makes it into the mid 60’s. Showers in the morning give way to heavy rain in the afternoon. Light wind. 22% chance of rainbows. Thursday also looks showery.

Road and Mountain Biking

I thought yesterday morning was a good day for a ride. It sure looked good: light wind, sunshine, not too much haze in the air. Well, it turned out to be too much haze in the air. It was hard on the lungs. My apologies if you too had the same experience. Your next chance for a light wind road ride (hopefully minus the smoke) will be on Tuesday. Your next chance for tacky trails will be Friday.

Northwave’s Locals’ Week Deals

It’s been a long and busy summer here in the Gorge, and Northwave would like to welcome you to Local’s Week! Live here? Your playground belongs to you again now that the kids are back in school, the teachers have returned to work, and the White Sprinter Vans are starting to hibernate for the winter. To celebrate, Northwave is offering sales on sails AND 15% off all sail repairs for all brands of sails. My favorite: the new window. If your window is cloudy, and you can’t see through it any more, get a new one. Not only will you be able to better see the other sailors, kiters, SUPers, and surfskis around you, you’ll also have a better view of the unicorns, rainbows, and Gorge scenery. Trust me on this one – it’s about $50 for a new window and worth every penny.

Upcoming Events

If you need something to do today, the Huckleberry Festival continues in Bingen, and the WAAAM Fly-In continues in Hood River. The Rural Rampage bike race takes place in Hood River today – this is an adventure-style bike race with teams composed of a minor and and adult, and all proceeds benefit the Hood River Wrestling Club and the Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute. Today at 11, it’s the Huck Jam skateboard contest in Bingen. Also, the Seahawks are playing at 10am.

Our regular Sunday happenings include three free yoga classes: one at Yoga Samadhi at 9, one at Pure Yoga at 4, and one at Root Down at 6. there’s also pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3, and there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30.

Coming up next weekend: the Gorge Kids Triathlon, a cleanup on the Sandy River, and a cleanup at Rooster Rock park.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
