Once again, there’s not much wind on the river this morning. The fishermen are happy, happy, happy as 38.575 Chinook came past Bonneville yesterday. Models suggest we’ll see light east wind today, perhaps as much as 15-18 this afternoon. I dunno. I’m not buying it. I’m calling straight-up light and variable (LTV) wind. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Tomorrow looks like an east wind day (another happy day for the Central Gorge fishermen). Expect 23-27 at Rooster and Stevenson tomorrow, fading in the afternoon. The rest of the Gorge will see easterlies at 5-10 from mid-morning on, unless you’re in the upper valleys, and then you can expect 10-15.

Random Morning Thoughts
My cat woke me up in the middle of the night last night by stomping her cold paw in the middle of my head. Like the rest of us, she wants love, and like many of use, she isn’t quite sure how to ask for it in a way that it will be freely given.
Anyway, she woke me up, and I found myself unable to get back to sleep. In the past, I would have panicked about this, not wanting to be tired the next day. But after reading the research on segmented sleep cycles, I no longer fight the wee hour wakefulness. It’s natural to be up in the middle of the night. And, just as it’s natural to be up, it’s natural to fall back asleep after a couple of hours.
I’m lucky enough to have a summer schedule that can accommodate this flexibility. You may not. But perhaps, the next time you’re awake when you don’t want to be, you can take solace in the fact that wee hour insomnia is only your body doing what it would do if you killed the electric lights. Be gentle, be patient, find something quiet and calm to do (not screen time!) and know that your body will want to fall back asleep. Have an awesome sleep with awesome dreams tonight
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s beautiful this morning, and either the Nothing burned off before I woke up (late) or there was no Nothing today. Yesterday’s Nothing was pretty impressive for early September! Expect a sunny day today with temps in the low 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. Tomorrow looks sunny with temps in the upper 50’s early and the low 90’s (yup!) in the afternoon. Moderate east wind. Saturday looks partly cloudy with temps in the upper 50’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate to strong westerlies late. No rainbows for the three day period. Next chance of rainbow (and rain) is Monday.

Road and Mountain Biking
I saw a photo on Facebook of boletes and chanterelles yesterday. I suspect that photo came from around 4000′ in the Mt. Hood National Forest. With the additional rain that fell there Sunday (shutting down the Dirty Sellwood), it’s likely that the shrooms will pop in that area soon. Oh. This is a biking report. Oops. The trails are dusty with spots of tacky areas, but given how much rain fell at Bennett Pass over the weekend, Boulder Lakes and Gunsight might be nice. Road biking looks awesome today and moderately awesome tomorrow as the easterlies pick up. Saturday morning looks good too.

Northwave’s Locals’ Week Deals
It’s been a long and busy summer here in the Gorge, and Northwave would like to welcome you to Local’s Week! Live here? Your playground belongs to you again now that the kids are back in school, the teachers have returned to work, and the White Sprinter Vans are starting to hibernate for the winter. To celebrate, Northwave is offering sales on sails AND 15% off all sail repairs for all brands of sails. My favorite: the new window. If your window is cloudy, and you can’t see through it any more, get a new one. Not only will you be able to better see the other sailors, kiters, SUPers, and surfskis around you, you’ll also have a better view of the unicorns, rainbows, and Gorge scenery. Trust me on this one – it’s about $50 for a new window and worth every penny.
Upcoming Events
Today’s Thursday, and that means we have the race-pace Post n’ Pint bike ride this evening at 5:30 from Dirty Fingers. 2 hours of riding earns you a pint of beer. There’s a community yoga class tonight at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi.
Coming up tomorrow, columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association has their end-of-season party and awards banquet at the Butler Bank Social Club, and Oregon State Parks has a Song Circle at Vista house from 7-9. The Aluminum Man triathlon and Duathtlon happens in The Dalles on Saturday, Hood River County has a work party on the 170 trail Saturday, there’s a cleanup on the Salmon River headwaters at Timberline on Saturday and the Rural Rampage bike race in in Hood River on Sunday.
If you’ve got kids, get them signed up for the Gorge Kids Triathlon next week, or if you don’t have kids, volunteer for that event or the music festival of the Gorge – both benefit great charities.
Have an awesome day today!
