Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Westerlies continue today, late tomorrow, and on through the weekend. With various systems moving through, the strongest wind is likely to be between Mosier (stay away from there, please, due to the wildfire) and Rufus this weekend. Temps will be totally reasonable for watersports: mid 70s to mid 80s. Bridge of the Gods Kitefest and the Blowout run Friday through Sunday.

Today kicks off with marine clouds from the western Gorge into Hood River. The metro area was partly cloudy when I started typing. Pressures were 30.23/30.12/30.07 for gradients of 0.11 and 0.05. Wind speeds from Lyle to Arlington were generally 20-25. Under the clouds, with the exception of always-windy Viento (20-23), we had 10-13mph (Stevenson to Hood River). Eastern Gorge wind fades as the day goes on, so don’t jump in the car and drive yet. By late morning, we’ll have settled in to gusty 19-22 from Stevenson to Avery with 13-16 at Rufus and 5-10 east of there. Westerlies fade after 5pm today: 13-16 from Stevenson to Doug’s. River flow over the last 24 hours was 96-186kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast is 75F for Hood River.
A brief pause is forecast on Friday thanks to a passing ridge. Westerlies start at 10-13 from Viento to Swell and quickly fade to nothing. We’ll see E 10 for a few hours mid-morning near Stevenson with E 5mph from Hood River eastward. Periods of complete calm are possible mid afternoon. In the evening, westerlies return at 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s. High temp: 84F.

Saturday starts with 20-23 from Viento to Mosier, rises a few mph, and then shifts to the east. The west side drops to gusty 16-20 in the afternoon. Mosier to Rufus rises to 26-29 with 20-23 at Arlington and 10-15 at Threemile. High temp: 79F for Hood River and 90F out near Pasco.

Extended: Sunday looks quite similar to Saturday. More active, and very humid, weather arrives to start next week. We’ll lose the support of offshore high pressure as troughing asserts itself and weak lows move towards the northern parts of BC. This probably results in lesser wind, perhaps upper teens. That said, ensembles are more optimistic, so all hope is not lost. Warmer weather, and thus probably less wind, is forecast starting Wednesday for a couple of days, but there’s a huge range in the ensembles for wind. So we’ll leave it there for now. There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. There’s a free community paddle at Wylde Wind and Water every Saturday at 10am (gear provided, all ages). They also have a free community wingfoil orientation every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Hook (all ages, gear provided). Northwave and GoFoil sponsor wingfoil races on Tuesday evenings.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Kreps and Green Diamond Land (formerly SDS) are now closed to fire danger. That includes Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood. Those lands will remain closed until significant rain in the fall. Also closed: Gorge 400 and lots of other trails due to the Whisky Creek Fire. Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are open per USFS website. 44 Road trails are all open and clear, including upper 450 and Fifteenmile. Gunsight is open. Boulder Lakes and other more remote trails are not bucked out yet. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
