Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There ain’t no snow in the forecast for today, but we do have a bit in the forecast before the weather turns warm and sunny starting Tuesday afternoon. We’ll switch to full-on spring skiing late next week with temps rising to 50F or higher on the slopes for Meadows Pond Skim day.

Sunday, however, starts off drizzly. The sun should come out this afternoon. Today’s snow level starts around 8000′ and drops to 4000′ in the afternoon before falling to 2500′ overnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” rain is forecast during the day before the sky clears. The next system, overnight, brings 0.2” to 0.3” water equivalent of snow, for 1-3” new. Wind will be W 20 in the morning rising to WSW 20-30 in the afternoon and becoming W 30 after midnight.

Monday starts with light snow and turns clear by the afternoon. The snow level will be 2500′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast in the morning for up to a couple inches of new snow. That’ll likely turn sticky and clumpy in the afternoon under the strong April sun. Wind: W 30 in the morning, WNW 20-25 in the afternoon, and NW 10-20 overnight.

Tuesday will be clear, sunny, and warmer as the day goes on. The free air freezing level (FAF) starts around 1500′ and rises to 8500′ in the afternoon before heading to 10,000′ overnight. Wind: NW 10-20 most of the day turns to N 10-15 overnight. Dry, warm, sunny weather is then forecast through at least Saturday. Spring skiing, yo! Finally!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Sunday, and we have a few days of westerlies scheduled. Starting Wednesday or Thursday, we’re likely to enter a period of easterlies that lasts through Saturday. Model agreement falls apart on Sunday, but there are hints of a strong westerly day either Sunday or early next week. Maybe. It’s way too far out for certainty about that.

Sunday starts with drizzle and westerlies at 5-10mph. By mid-morning, as the frontal system starts to move east, the wind picks up to gusty 12-15 all through the Gorge. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 24-27 from The Dalles to Arlington. West of The Dalles, intermittent light drizzle is possible under mostly cloudy sky. The wind will be gusty 10-13ish in that zone. Hold out until late afternoon, and Threemile should pick up to 24-27 as well. River flow yesterday was 117-140kcfs, river temp is 49F, and high temp forecast is 59F.

Monday sees offshore high pressure shift closer to the coast and also more to the north. The day starts with westerlies at 12-15 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 20-23 from The Dalles to Threemile. Afternoon wind picks up to 24-27 (perhaps a little more) from Lyle to Arlington. High temp: 57F. Tuesday starts with westerlies at 7-10mph all through the Gorge. The afternoon forecast is 17-21 from Stevenson to The Dalles but could end up a little stronger. High temp: 66F.

Cycling

Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. My understanding is that Post Canyon is snow-free to the top of Borderline. IT’s been raining on and off. If it rained more than 0.1”, it’s likely to be slick and muddy. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. With rain often stopping on the west side of Hood River, you may have better luck at Whoopdee or Syncline or Hospital Hill (which is full of ticks and poison oak). Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
