Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

We’ve finally entered spring skiing conditions. For a couple of days. It’ll be back to fresh snow and winter on Sunday. Okay, make that just one weekend day of spring skiing. The weather remains cool and snowy at least through next Thursday. After that, models disagree.

For Saturday, today, we start with mostly sunny sky. High clouds arrive quickly and thicken as the day goes on. Snowfall probably won’t happen until Sunday morning. The free air freezing level today will be 2000′ early, 5500′ this afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. Expect SW wind at 10-15mph all day with SSW 15-25 overnight.

Snow kicks off by mid-morning Sunday and sticks around on and off through the night. The snow level will be 5000′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. About 0.2” to 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day for 2-3” new snow. Same overnight. Wind will be SW 15-30 all day and all night. Cloudy weather starts Monday. Intermittent snow flurries continue for the 24 hours period. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. Up to 2-3” of new snow is forecast for the 24 hour period. Wind will be SW 15-25 all day rising to SW 25-45 overnight.

Light snowfall continues on Tuesday and possibly Wednesday with an inch or so of fresh each day. The snow level will fall to 1500-2000′ each night and rise to 3000-3500′ during the day. We start to see model differences Thursday but those really amplify starting Friday. At this point, it’s not possible to make a call for next weekend; some models call for continued cool and wet, and many call for warmer and drier. Let’s let this shake out for a few days and see how things settle. In the meantime… enjoy all the snow!

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… be selective. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
