Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Winter is most definitely not over. Models hold us in a cool, trough, showery pattern through at least next Wednesday. After that: uncertainty. The only time temps will climb above freezing on Mt. Hood will be Saturday afternoon. Notice how our forecast has been trending cooler and cooler? No, you are not imagining that! Planning to XC ski at Teacup this weekend? The trails are closed between 5pm Friday and midnight and also 5pm Saturday and midnight to allow for ideal grooming. Thanks for respecting the groomers’ request!

Friday starts out partly cloudy and chilly as 850mb temps fall to -5C and the free air freezing level falls to 1000-1500′. That freezing level (FAF) will rise to 4000′ in the afternoon and hold overnight. Sky will be partly cloudy after a mostly clear start. Wind: variable to 10mph for the 24 hour period.

Saturday will be partly high overcast early (watch for a stellar sunrise) and mostly cloudy later. The FAF will be 4000′ in the morning and 6000′ in the afternoon. Overnight, it falls to 5000-5500′ or so. Wind will be SW 10 early, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 15-25 overnight.

Sunday starts out clear, but clouds arrive quickly. Snow starts falling in the afternoon or perhaps late morning. The snow level will be 5000′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and (yup!) 1500′ overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) arrives for the day shift. That’s 2-3” of dense snow. Overnight, a couple more inches of fluffier, lighter snow is forecast. Wind: S 15-25 early, SW 25-50 in the afternoon, and W 25-30 overnight. Monday will have flurries during the day and heavier snow overnight. Moderate snowfall continues into Tuesday and Wednesday for up to a foot of new total in the Monday to Wednesday time period. Winter, as we discussed, is not over. Enjoy.

Friday will be a nothin’ day in terms of wind. It starts with light and variable wind. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 7-10mph or so from Stevenson to Viento or maybe Hood River. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles. High temp: 59F. Sunday will be light and variable to start and then light westerly. Add in some rain to Hood River after noon. Westerlies pick up to the teens (but very gusty) in the western Gorge. Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… be selective. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
