Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

A few inches of snow fell on the slopes yesterday. That happened while I was sleeping off a late-night crisis call and not writing the forecast. Thursday and Friday and Saturday will all be dry on the mountain, and snow will probably hold off until the afternoon or evening on Sunday. This sets us up for spring skiing, transformed snow conditions, probably by Friday and if not by Saturday. Saturday is Pride at Mt. Hood Meadows. And Teacup will be grooming Saturday and Sunday. They request you stay off the trails Friday and Saturday night between 5pm and midnight (preferably all night) to let the snow set up for the morning session.

Ok. Thursday. Partly high overcast all day long and mellow. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1000′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 0-2000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: NW 20-30 in the morning, W 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight. Friday will be mostly clear in the morning and partly cloudy in the afternoon. The FAF will be 2000′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 4500′ after midnight. Wind: NW 10-15 in the morning, W 5 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 after midnight.

On Saturday, we’ll have another dry day. High clouds in the morning give way to mostly cloudy sky in the afternoon and cloudy sky overnight. No precip. The FAF will be 4500′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and back to 4500′ after midnight. Wind will start at SW 10-15 and will build to SW or SSW 20-35 from early afternoon on through the night. Snow starts up early Sunday afternoon and continues through Monday morning. At this point, we’re looking at 3-6” of new with the snow level around 3500′. Additional light snowfall is forecast next week as temps remain cool and weak systems wander through. No spring for you!

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… be selective. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
