Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Just an inch of snow fell Monday night into Tuesday morning, and we officially have… dust on crust! An inch or two more today and up to half a foot on Wednesday should refresh the groom, at least. We’ll be back to dry weather Thursday through Saturday. Models are leaning towards snow Sunday into Monday, and perhaps even a significant (for April) snowfall to start next week.

Tuesday kicks off with snow on the mountain as a weather system wanders inland. We should see sun, at least above 5500-6000′, this afternoon. A trace of snow returns overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ early, but it’ll fall to 1500-2000′ in the afternoon and 500-1000′ overnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for an inch or two of snow. Afternoon: partly cloudy. Overnight: trace of snow. Wind will be W 25-30 all the way through the afternoon and will fade to SW then SE 10mph overnight.

Wednesday starts off snowy, but in a fun twist, we’ll have easterly orographics aiding this system. This is, as mentioned several weeks ago, unusual and tricky to predict. So, the snow level will be 500-1000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and back down to a freezing level of 0-1500′ overnight depending on cloud coverage. During the day, 0.4” to 0.5” WE is forecast for 4-5” new snow. Overnight, perhaps 0.1” WE additional for one more inch. Wind: SE 10 in the morning, ENE 15 early afternoon, NW 15-20 in the evening, and NW 25-35 overnight.

Thursday starts out clear and quickly turns partly high overcast. Clouds deepen in the afternoon and start to dissipate overnight. A trace of snow may or may not fall in the afternoon, but other than that, the weather should be dry. Freezing level: 500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 0-1000′ overnight. Wind will be NW 25-35 early but will quickly fade to W 10-15 midday and fall to W 5 overnight. Friday looks partly cloudy with light wind. The freezing level will max out around 4000′. Dry weather is also forecast for Saturday. It looks like snow will return on Sunday. Have a great week!

Gorge Wind Forecast

An active weather pattern drives intermittent gusty westerlies over the next few days. Tuesday kicks off with a little wind out east and calm wind in the west. Pressures, if you’re curious, were 30.03/30.00/29.92 at 7am. As a cold front swings through this morning, we’ll see westerlies pick up to gusty 24-28 from Biggs (aka Amayah’s Indian food cart) to Boardman. The wind will start to fade mid-afternoon. We’ll eventually see the western Gorge, Stevenson to The Dalles, pick up to gusty 15-18 in an unstable atmosphere. River flow readings yesterday were 106-148kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 49F.

Wednesday starts with E 15mph at Rooster and E 10mph at Stevenson. Everywhere else: calm. Afternoon westerlies, thanks to building offshore high pressure, climb to gusty 17-20 from Viento to The Dalles. High temp: 50F. Thursday starts with 10-13 all through the Gorge. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 17-21 from The Dalles to Rufus. High temp: 51F. Models suggest light/variable wind Friday.

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… be selective. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
