Wednesday: windy one today, warm week ahead

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you!

Peak wind for the week looks to happen today, which happens to be Wednesday. Westerlies start out light the next two days, but stick around. The weekend weather is still a bit up in the air (pun intended), but it appears that we’ll have at least one moderate to strong day.

For Wednesday, offshore high pressure gives a helping hand in the form of 1031mb. In the desert, the situation is lower, drawing the wind across the Cascades. With morning gradients at .11 and .05, you’ll find wind anywhere from Stevenson to Biggs today. We’ll see a quick rise to 25-28 at Mosier (locals only). Once the clouds in Hood river burn off (mid-morning?), the wind rises to 25-28 from Viento to Mosier. Stevenson joins in this this afternoon, as does the Lyle to Doug’s stretch. Biggs will be a bit too far east to benefit fully, but Rufus should see at least 15-18 this afternoon. It’s worth noting that upper flow is quite northerly today, and that could make for gusty conditions on the river. River flow is 258kcfs and temp is 58 degrees. High temp today: 73.

High pressure pushes farther inland on Thursday, but we should see westerlies still despite lackluster proof in the models. The morning starts out light, perhaps 5-10. Afternoon wind picks up to 15-18 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Similar conditions greet the day on Friday; afternoon wind looks like gusty 21-25 as a low approaches BC and a front offshore tickles the PNW.
