Tuesday: last cloudy, cool day for a while!

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you!

It’s another soggy, gray morning in the western Gorge, but this will be the end of the gray, cool, calm weather for at least several days. A weak low off the coast moves inland this afternoon. Strong high pressure builds in behind it. Will it happen early enough for westerlies? Yes! Could the timing be better? Sure, but it’s good enough. What you see is what you get this morning, perhaps with a bit of a bump to 12-15 east of Rufus as the desert warms. Our friendly low pressure system crosses the Cascades around 2pm. Westerlies build after that, to gusty 12-16 in the partly cloudy west and 24-27 from Mosier to Arlington. Stronger wind is possible if everything works out just right, but bank on those mid-20’s. River flow is 266kcfs and temp is 58 degrees.

Offshore high pressure builds to 1030mb on Wednesday and our not-so-strong low hangs in the Columbia Basin. That’s enough for dawn patrol at 21-25 from Viento to Mosier with 16-19 east of there. It appears that the high pressure may push far enough inland to decrease the wind from Stevenson to Moiser in the afternoon. It does appear that upper flow will have enough north to it to create gusty conditions on the river. Whether or not the afternoon wind fades west of Mosier, we’ll have 25-29, perhaps a bit more, for Rowena to Rufus.

Thursday sees that high pressure push inland for a lighter wind day. Expect light westerlies to start with W 16-19 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. It’s worth noting that models are actually predicting very little wind that day, but it appears that strong offshore high pressure may provide just enough energy to keep the westerlies going. Don’t be surprised if we see low double digits instead of upper teens.

On to Friday through Sunday. Friday looks calm in the morning with upper teens in the afternoon. Models suggest that Saturday and Sunday will be windier. Sunday’s forecast contains a fair bit of uncertainty as far as cloud cover and/or potential rain, so details are not yet clear.
