Saturday: definitely Junuary.

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you!

Today’s westerlies will be the strongest we’ll see for the next 3-5 days, so you may want to jump on it if the upper 20’s are your thing. That said, the PNW will be plagued by a series of weather systems and weak offshore lows for the better part of the next week. That will diminish wind quality and squash the potential for steady, strong wind. So, for Saturday, you’ll find yourself some wind in the eastern Gorge where the sun will come out. Clouds and showery stick around in the western Gorge all day, increasing after 11am or so. That keeps the wind in the gusty 13-16 range from Stevenson to Doug’s, although there may be periods of time when the Lyle-Doug’s stretch sees more wind. East of Doug’s, westerlies start the day at 18-22. They build to 25-29 from Avery to Threemile this afternoon. River flow is 296kcfs and temp is 58 degrees. High temp today: 59, cold for June. Looking at Sunday, we see a break between weather systems. A front approaching the coast during the day will limit the wind’s potential for greatness. Expect light westerlies through the whole Gorge to start the day. Afternoon: 10-13 and sunny int eh west and 18-22 from Rowena to Biggs with sunshine. East of there, you’ll find 10-13. Monday looks quite wet all the way to The Dalles, especially in the morning. The wind starts light easterlies. After this system moves through, the wind picks up to 12-15 in the east and 24-27 from Rowena to Threemile.
