Wednesday. Wind, wind and more wind.

DSC_4556-Edit
I hope you got out on the river yesterday in that super strong wind. We’re off to a different start today, with westerlies in the single digits to mid teens. The models and gradients are disagreeing a bit this morning, which leaves me in a bit of a quandary about the forecast. With .09 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc) at 6am, I’m thinking we’ll see 20-23 today. Models suggest 10-13 with 13-16 possible in the evening.

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Let’s ignore the models today and go with this forecast, based pretty much purely on gut instinct: 16-19 from Viento to Mosier for the early morning session followed by 20-23 for the morning to early afternoon time stretch. A mid-afternoon heat lull into the 15-18 range seems likely today, given a forecast high of 87 in Portland and 91 in Hood River. The wind should bounce back in the evening with 18-22 from Stevenson to Mosier (Doug’s seems unlikely but possible today, given the heat).

Thursday sees high pressure build over the region, giving us a forecast of 10-13 for much of the day followed by 13-16 in the evening, strongest near Hood River and Mosier in the morning and from Stevenson to Mosier in the late afternoon and evening.

Friday currently looks like 16-19 for much of the day. As a low pressure system drops toward BC in the afternoon, we should see the wind pick up to 24-27. That wind will be easiest to find at Stevenson, Avery, the White Salmon Sandbar and possibly Maryhill. This sort of setup tends to result in gusty, lighter wind at Swell, Mosier, and the Rowena stretch.

Now, on to the weekend, for our long-range and totally unreliable forecast. Models suggest a 10 degree temperature drop between Friday and Saturday, and we all know what that means: WIND! The forecast currently calls for 30-35 from Hood River eastward on both Saturday and Sunday. That could make things interesting for the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest, especially the Blowout on Sunday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m taking a class on multiculturalism right now. I just received an email from my professor asking me to participate in an activity talking about an aspect of my identity development. It so happens that the piece of my identity she asked about isn’t one that’s important to me. It just “is”, so I was surprised that she asked me to talk about it, because I haven’t spent much time reflecting on it.

We humans like to place each other in categories. That helps us figure out ways to relate (or sometimes IF we can relate!). And sometimes we (not my professor, btw, just us people in general) assume that a visible aspect of someone’s identity (pigmentation, accent, gender, etc.) is an important part of the person’s identity.

Think about yourself. What aspects of your identity are important to you? Your sports? Your gender (or lack thereof)? Your sexual orientation? Your religion? Your sorority membership? Your political affiliation? Take a moment to list all the aspects of your identity.

Now, ask yourself, “Which of those are serving me?” “Which of those could disappear at any moment in adverse circumstances?” “Which of these pieces of my identity cause me pain?” With your identities all laid out in front of you in a list, you can evaluate them, understand them, and choose what to do with them. I don’t know what will come of this, but you’ll certainly know yourself a bit better! Have an awesome day!
