Wednesday. Sun, light wind, and more open trails.

It’s not quite glassy out there this morning, but I wouldn’t call it windy either. The marine layer has pulled back from where it’s been the last couple of days, the desert low pressure system has moved east, and the offshore high pressure is starting to build inland. All those pieces will combine for less wind over the next few days. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

With the early gradient at .05 (pdx-dls) and a few shallow low clouds in Portland, the desert will get enough of a jump on heating to pull some wind through the Tunnel today. Expect light wind this morning. By midday, we’ll have 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier. Then we’ll see a slow and steady build to 16-19 late in the day, perhaps mid-afternoon on, from Stevenson to The Dalles.

See below for details.

Tomorrow starts off with less marine clouds and less gradient, for W 5-10 or less first thing in the morning. The wind will pick up just a little in the afternoon, maxing out at 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier. Expect a light wind start on Friday. As an upper level low begins to move onshore, we’ll see a late burst of gusty 21-24 or so from Stevenson to The Dalles.

As of right now, we’re looking at W 23-26 on Saturday and W 13-16 on Sunday, but that’s a long ways out and is subject to change.

Random Morning Thoughts

This one’s going to get personal. Just a warning. I’ve been thinking a lot about how to receiving caring and appreciation and love from others. This is something I’ve struggled with all my life – understanding that people do care about me and do appreciate me. With that in mind, it’s a bit ironic that I’ve stumbled into a line of work (this forecast) where people let me know they appreciate me nearly every day, whether it’s in the form of thankful emails or donations to my grad school fund.

Even then, it’s still hard for me to feel appreciated. Sometimes I even feel guilty that you all are reading or subscribing or sending thanks. Yes, I know this is irrational, and that’s become more and more clear to me over the last few weeks.

Being appreciated and cared for and loved feels good. So I’ve decided that each time I receive an email of thanks, a donation, or a kind word on the street, I’m going to stop and really feel it in my heart and let it sink in. And I’m going to encourage each of you to do the same when someone appreciates you or compliments you or thanks you.

It’s true that we need to love ourselves, but it’s also true that love from others strengthens our ability to love ourselves and the people around us. And it’s true that the more we use the “love and appreciation” brain circuit, the stronger and stickier it becomes, and the more likely it is to kick in during all sorts of situations. So take the time to feel the caring from those around you.

By the way, I love all of you readers for being the kind of people who make time in your life for playing in the great outdoors, for giving yourself the gift of play, and for having the determination and courage to take up some difficult sports. Y’all are awesome. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a sunny start to the day outside my window. Expect temps in the mid 50’s this morning and upper 70’s this afternoon. Light to moderate wind, no rainbows, and just a slight chance of afternoon thunder. Tomorrow starts off the same: sunny. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind, no rainbows, slight chance of afternoon cumulus clouds. Friday looks just a touch warmer: sunny with temps in the upper 80’s and a slight chance of afternoon thunder. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s actually some news to report in mountain biking world this morning: Gunsight ridge is now open. There are three spots of snow and no trees down. I do not have word on Boulder Lakes, but if Gunsight is open, it’s most likely that Boulder Lakes is open too. That means everything is open on the 44 Road, and you are now free to shuttle from Bennett Pass to Sawtooth Pub. In road biking news, you can expect relatively light wind for much of the day today with light wind all day tomorrow and for most of the day on Friday.
