Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The forecast for Mt. Hood is holding steady with good news. We’re about to see significant snowfall and a jump in the snowpack! First, though, we have to get through one more round of rain, but that rain is unlikely to impact you.

For Wednesday, we’ll start off clear, see clouds in the afternoon, rain starting around 6pm, and snow after midnight. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 8500′ in the afternoon, and 4500′ after midnight. The mountain will see about 3/4” rain followed by .6” water value (WV) that falls as snow. That should result in 4-7” of new snow at 5000′ by Thursday morning. Wind will be SW 20 early, rising to SW 35+ in the evening and dropping to SW 20 after midnight.

Steady snow continues Thursday morning followed by sunshine on Thursday afternoon. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning with the free air freezing level at 1500′ after midnight. About .5-.7” WV falls during the day, for 5-7” of new snow. Wind will be SW 20-25 during the day and SW 15-20 after midnight.

Friday sees parly cloudy sky in the morning, light snow in the afternoon, and heavy snowfall overnight. The snow level will be at 1500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. The mountain will receive .2” WV during the day, for a couple inches of snow. Another .7” WV arrives overnight. With the snow level quite low, this should result in 7-9” of dry, fluffy snow. Wind will be SW 15-20 in the morning, WSW 20-25 in the afternoon, and W 25 overnight.

Light snowfall continues Saturday morning (when all the ski resorts will park out – don’t forget about those buses to Meadows from the Hood River Event Site). A couple inches fall during the day. Another 4-6” fall during the day Sunday. There’s a little disagreement between the models after that. The cheeriest forecast comes from the Euro for later next week: we end up in the bullseye of a cross-Pacific atmospheric river that dumps tons of snow on Mt. Hood. Let’s all vote for that!

Random Morning Thoughts

This is a gentle Wednesday reminder to do as that bumper sticker advises: “Don’t believe everything you think.”

Your mind will tell you all sorts of things. Sometimes you will believe those things, and sometimes you will not. Can you stop for a moment and remember a time when your mind came up with a totally ridiculous idea, something you’d never do, perhaps an act of violence or impulsiveness?

Somehow you were able to decide that this was not Truth (or maybe you weren’t, and learned the hard way!). How did you know that your mind was, pardon the crudeness, full of crap? You didn’t listen then, but I bet you often listen to things your mind tells you – that you’re not “good enough” or that you “should” do something.

Rather than contemplating the details, I’d encourage you to think about your relationship with your mind. Can you really trust everything it says? Is it really “you”? How much power does that stream of thoughts have over your sense of self, your emotions, and your actions. Take a little time to reflect on this, if you like, and see what happens. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon is currently closed to all users to protect the trails from damage. Whoopdee is closed to bikes and horses for the same reason. Syncline remains mobbed. I’m not sure about the upper half of Nestor, but the Horse Camp section is in good shape with one tree down.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday. There’s community meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30pm and Zumba at the St. Francis House in Odell at 6pm.
