Wednesday. Ready to shred some Columbia?

used
We’re headed into a very Gorge-y stretch of wind, meaning that if you’re in search of light wind, you may find yourself disappointed over the next couple of days. This morning (Wednesday, if you were wondering) started off with wind in the low 20’s in the Viento to Sandbar region with teens further east. If you want wind in these speeds, get it now, because it’s going to pick up. The trick is knowing exactly where to go today: marine clouds have pushed past Hood River, and gradients (.09 and .04) are currently indicating that your best bet will be close to home. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

That said, our friend the GFS model predicts 23-27 by 11am from Mosier to Maryhill with a quick build to 26-30 from Mosier to Maryhill by 2pm. Arlington should join in the fun late this afternoon, holding until the sun sets. All that said, we did start out the day with Swell the windiest spot. If the sun can warm us up just a bit here in Paradise, we’ll also see 26-30 from Viento to Swell today. If the clouds stick around, we’ll end up with gusty 20-25 close to home (home being my home, not your home – I have no idea if it’s windy there!). Best bets for nuking wind today: Mosier to Rufus, with the Rowena to Doug’s stretch with the best shot at 30+.

Thursday will likely start off with even more morning marine clouds. Late in the day, we’ll see a low pressure system and accompanying cold front drop in from Canada. This is actually a pretty good setup, and should result in Dawn Patrol at 23-26 from Mosier east to Arlington. By early afternoon, we should have 28-32 from Mosier to Threemile. Once again, the Viento to Hood River stretch is a big maybe depending on the marine cloud penetration… we may have to just wait and see what happens. That said, the wind will be steadier further east, at least until late in the afternoon when that approaching weather system may make things a bit gusty. Windiest of the windy spots on Thursday? Rowena through Rufus.

Friday sees that upper level low drop into eastern Washington in the evening, and that could have an impact on wind quality during the day. That said, we’re currently looking at another deep marine layer. Dawn Patrol looks to be 15-19 east of The Dalles with 24-28 in the afternoon east of Mosier. Hood River might just be cloudy all day, resulting in gusty 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier. It’s another wait and see day, I suppose.

Now, remember how I told you yesterday to hold off on planning for the weekend? As of yesterday, both days looked like mid 20’s. As of this morning, Sunday looks to max out at 17-20 and Saturday at 14-17. That’s just today’s forecast. Look at it again tomorrow, and we could have a return to strong west wind. So there ya go. Just come to the Gorge this weekend because it’s an awesome place, wind or no wind!

No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I had an interesting thing that I wanted to talk about this morning, and then I got sidetracked by FiveThirtyEight’s morning newsletter. They referenced an NPR story about living arrangements in the USA. More adults 18-34 live with their parents than with partners or in any other situation. 32% of young adults 18-34 are still living with parents. Yes, you read that right.

Our recent historical launching-from-home pattern is for young people to move out and not come back. Due to current economics (jobs don’t pay well and housing and college are wickedly expensive), it makes more sense for people to live with parents.

This raises questions of how we as a society view these young adults. Quick – bias check time! I just told you a 30 year old was living with her parents. What are your thoughts about her? What are your thoughts about your kids, should the situation be the same with them? Are you supportive? Blaming? Shaming? Creating stories about why this person is choosing to do this?

And why are we having a bias check? Because this, for now at least, is the norm, and we don’t want to shame a nation of young adults. A plurality of young adults live with parents, and this is something we need to wrap our heads around quickly. It’s a change that happened fast (much like marijuana suddenly becoming legal on both sides of the Gorge), and when quick changes happen, our views may take some time to catch up with reality (you can check your views on legal marijuana and same-sex marriage too – those changes happened just as fast!).

One last semi-humorous thing to add… we may now understand why young adults are overwhelmingly supporting Bernie Sanders. If you were stuck living with your parents due to low wages and high cost of living, you’d be voting for a revolution too, right? 😉 Have an awesome day!

Strong west wind. 4% chance of rainbows. Friday looks quite cloudy with a chance of sprinkles. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Road and Mountain Biking

The first three miles of Surveyor’s from the north are open. I have no word about the rest of the trail. Knebal and Dog River are open. Lewis River is open, as is Falls Creek to the Horse Camp. I’m telling you all this because I haven’t ridden Post in five days (horror of horrors) and can’t give you a report of conditions closer to home. Forget about road biking for the next three days due to very strong west wind. Save yourself for Sunday when the wind will be light to start (unless something changes…) In bike race news, there’s downhill racing at Skibowl Friday through Sunday, there’s the Lewis & Clark 12/24 in Hockinson Saturday, and the Sisters Stampede on Sunday.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include free yoga at the Heartgate Sanctuary in Oak Grove at 8:30 and meditation at 8;15 at Flow Yoga. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5 tonight and the women’s only Post n’ Pinot mountain bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30. The race-pace Post n’ Pint is tomorrow night, same place, same time.

This weekend’s full of races, with mountain biking at Skibowl Friday through Sunday, the Color Dash Run in North Bonneville on Saturday, the Lewis and Clark 24 hour race in Hockinson Saturday, and the Sisters Stampede on Sunday. And it’s not quite a race, but there’s a catfish derby in The Dalles over the weekend too. Lastly, Skibowl is free for military members all weekend.

Have an awesome day today!
