Wednesday. Rain!

DSC_3266
There’s not much wind out there this morning, and there won’t be much wind anywhere for the next few days with one exception: the coast will see strong southerly wind as the remnants of Hurricane Oho cruise past on Friday. Until then, you can expect lovely conditions for fishing and road biking. Well, other than the rain! Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Anyway, expect west wind at 10-13 or so this morning near Swell, quickly fading to no wind at all midday through the whole Gorge, and then picking up to gusty 10-13 late this afternoon from Swell to The Dalles as this weather system clears the area.

Tomorrow looks like an east wind day with 13-16 at Steven’s Locks and 20-23 at Rooster’s Rocks pretty much all day long. Friday starts off with east wind at 15-18 and switches to light west wind in the afternoon. As of right now, it looks like a weather system will move through on Saturday giving us gusty 25-29 in the eastern Gorge, but forecasting that far out with our current setup is really pushing it. I wouldn’t trust that forecast!

Out on the coast, there’s not much in the way of windsport wind. Expect light southerlies today with a W swell 2′ @ 12 seconds. Tomorrow looks like light southerlies with SW 4′ @ 9. Friday will have a period of strong S wind at 30+ with combined windswell/swell 13′, period unknown. All of these wind speeds could change if the track of Hurrican Oho switches further east or west.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: no wind for the next three days.

Instead, I will forecast for other places. Like the coast. Today: S 10-15, NW swell 2′ @ 7 seconds. Tomorrow, S 5-10, W 3′ @ 10 seconds. Thursday, S 5-10 or LTV, SW 4′ @ 8 seconds.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: no wind at either of those places for the next three days.

Random Morning Thoughts

There’s a lot of talk in the media these days – and probably in grocery store lines too – about preventing people with mental illness from having guns. I’d like to point out some of the difficulties with this argument. As you’ve probably figured out, I’m a proponent of mental health care – I think mental health is as important as physical health, and I think everyone should have access to counseling.

Here’s how the system works: If you use your insurance to access mental health services (counseling, a psychiatrist), you will be diagnosed with a mental illness of some sort. That’s the only way your insurance will pay. You may be diagnosed with something minor – adjustment disorder, depression, social anxiety – but you will still carry a diagnosis. Even if you just wanted to talk through a breakup or deal with a rough transition of some sort. Even if your emotional pain was only temporary. If you pay for counseling with your insurance, you will be among the mentally ill.

If the fear-mongers have their way, you too will be unable to purchase a gun. And you will be on a List of some sort, because how else will gun sellers track who is mentally ill? They will need to access a list. Your health issues will no longer be private.

Sure, you can limit which illnesses will be on the list (Antisocial Personality Disorder might be a good one), but where do you draw the line? Can someone with PTSD have a gun? What if they have PTSD due to childhood trauma or present-day neighborhood violence? Can depressed people have guns? About 30% of people become depressed at some point in their lives. How about Premenstrual Dysmorphic Disorder (really bad PMS) or Gender Dysphoria (non cis-gender people seeking to transition) or ADHD?

In other words, if the fear-mongers have their way, you will need to avoid using your insurance to pay for counseling if you’d like to retain your right to purchase a gun. Counseling, love, support, and community connection are the things that prevent people from feeling so horrible that they lash out at others. Disallowing the mentally ill from purchasing guns will just discourage more people from taking advantage of counseling resources. That’s the opposite of what we need.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The weather models do not handle setups like today’s well. As of yesterday, we were expecting small amounts of rain in Portland. Now we are expecting .5” to 1” of rain in Portland. That’s a lot of rain, and sounds especially drenching to someone who doesn’t have fenders for her bike or cycling raingear. Good thing I’m not made of sugar, or I’d melt on my ride to therapy and school today!

Anyway, expect a cloudy start and an on-and-off drizzly day today. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early (a new record high-low was set today) and the upper 60’s this afternoon. It will be muggy. Very muggy. Light wind. 11% chance of rainbows (warm fronts, with their high clouds, are not as conducive to rainbows as are cold fronts). Models are not giving much clarity on today’s precip amounts, but the HRRR says .1-.25” here in HR, so let’s go with that.

Tomorrow will likely start off with the Nothing cloud due to mugginess, but should clear up by afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon with high humidity. Light east wind. Friday looks cloudy and extra muggy as tropical air from Hurricane Oho whacks the PNW. It may even rain on Friday evening. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon with a 3% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks rainy with a much higher chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

First things first: there’s a fire in the Badger Creek Wilderness, and that’s caused USFS to close several trail in the area. Boulder Lake, Gunsight, Gumjuwac, High Prairie and all trails adjacent to Badger Lake (that’s wilderness) are closed at this time. In more positive trail news, it looks like we’ll see some rain today and quite possibly more this weekend, meaning tomorrow looks like a great day for mountain biking! Fingers crossed!

McCurdy Farms, Hood River

Need pears? Need apples? Need a suggestion for a good bike ride around here? The McCurdy Farms fruit stand halfway up Peggy’s Roost Hill (2080 Tucker Road, just below Portland Drive) has the best prices on the best fruit and the best ride suggestions too. Fruit prices are $.50-$.75/lb for beautiful pears and apples. Cycling advice is free. They have lots of my favorite pears, Comice. Maybe they have your favorites too. Stop by and say hi to Natalie and Craig when you ride by on your Valley Loop bike ride. Come back later for lots of fruit and suggestions on other rides. Upcoming Events

Lots of the summer events are wrapping up for the season, and that leaves you with more time to read books. Hah. If you want to do something more active, there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory tonight at 5:30, and there’s Aikido at Trinity Natural Medicine at 6pm tonight.

Coming up tomorrow, there’s a community (by donation) yoga class at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30, there’s free tai chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and there’s free Zumba at 6:30 at the Mt. Hood Community Center.

Coming up Saturday, there’s a free half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi with the monks from Pacific Hermitage, and on Sunday, there’s a (sliding-scale $20+) Contact Improv workshop with Carolyn Stuart of Portland. Cascade Acupuncture Center has more information on that one.

Have an awesome day today!
