Wednesday. Rain, rain, come and play; tacky dirt for us today!

WilKRainbow
Despite the downpour of rain outside my window as I was writing the forecast this morning, there were decent gradients and some wind way out east. PDX-DLS was .06 at 6am and DLS-PSC was .07, with 20mph at Arlington. Now, today’s a bit messy; multiple weather systems will be swinging through the Northwest, and that will make the wind unreliable. The general picture looks like this: 10-13 max from Stevenson to Hood River this morning, with 13-16 possible this afternoon. Further east, expect low 20’s this morning, a midday lull, then 23-26 this afternoon from Rowena to Arlington. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow also struggles with the effects of an upper level low sitting over the Northwest. Expect 5-10 early, 13-16 by noon, and 21-24 in the afternoon. The strongest wind tomorrow will be at the Rowena-Doug’s stretch of river, with the Rufus stretch possible, but most likely gusty. The western Gorge, depending on clouds, will probably end up with gusty 13-16, and Arlington looks like 15-18.

The upper level low goes away on Friday and high pressure builds off the coast behind it. Expect 5-10 in the morning, slowly building to 20-23 in the afternoon, most likely strongest at Rowena-Doug’s with 15-18 near Hood River. Tomorrow’s afternoon wind may be affected by thunderstorms in the afternoon. And maybe not.

Random Morning Thoughts

Our feelings can cause us all sorts of troubles if we allow ourselves to be ruled by them. Feelings can be pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. We tend to cling to the pleasant feelings and feel upset when they’re gone. We tend to fight the unpleasant feelings and want them to go away, creating more pain around having them. As for the neutral feelings, well, we find neutrality boring. So, we live on an emotional rollercoaster.
Mindfulness meditation can create space between us and our feelings. Space can give us the freedom to step off the carnival ride and just watch what’s happening. And that can make tough stuff less painful.

I’ve found another technique rather helpful, and I don’t know if it will resonate with anyone else, because my experience is rather unique, but perhaps it will help one of you…

My selection of feelings used to be quite limited (long story…). I could choose from depression, anxiety, helplessness, frustration and joy. As I learned to access the hundreds of other feelings – delight, sadness, grief, anger, rage, awe, inspiration, love, etc. – I became utterly fascinated with all of them. They were new and exciting and really, really cool! I still think they’re rad.

It’s hard to be 100% in pain when you’re fascinated by the unpleasant emotion causing the pain. Try it. See if you can pinpoint exactly what feeling you’re experiencing. Is it grief? Loss? Sadness? Nostalgia? Wistfulness? Notice where it manifests in your body (If you don’t have body feelings yet, that’s okay. I didn’t either). Take a deep interest in the emotion and pay careful attention to it.

You’ll find your distress subsides as you attune to the feeling. You might fall in love with it, even if it’s causing you some pain. And that, I think, is one of the keys to being free from suffering: being fascinated and in love with all the emotional experiences, even those we label “unpleasant”. May you experience fascination, awe and wonder today. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Oh yes! More “change in the weather” is outside my window right now. Rain!!! Expect a showery morning with occasional showers later as multiple systems swing through. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Up-and-down wind, 97% chance of rainbows. Snow level 8000′ early, dropping to 6500′ in the afternoon.

Tomorrow looks mostly cloudy as an upper low sits over the region. We may see a few light showers at various times during the day. Temps will be right around 50 early and in the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late, 47% chance of rainbows. Snow level 6000′.

Friday looks partly cloudy early with increasing showers in the afternoon with a chance of thunder. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind late, 57% chance of rainbows. Snow level 6000′ early and 7500′ in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

Oh. What a delightful surprise I awoke to: rain! There was .06 already today as I was writing this section of the forecast and more coming on the radar. That should be enough to reissue the TACKALERT for Post Canyon this afternoon – it’ll be a little slick this morning, most likely, especially all those roots and rocks.

As for the road biking, well, I’ll check that out in Portland for you today. I suspect it will be wet and slippery, and I’m really hoping my fancy 2-liter-bottle fenders work well.
