Gorge Wind Forecast

As an upper level low moves onshore into California today and into eastern Oregon, we’ll see the pressure drop on the eastside. High pressure in the Pacific and a cold front offshore will enhance the cross-Cascade gradient. With all this “stuff” going on, the wind is likely to be on the rangey and inconsistent side of steady.

The 7am gradient was .11 from Portland to The Dalles with another .02 out east. Water temp is 69 degrees, and flow is 151kcfs. Early morning wind will be 10-13 most places except near Hood River where the Hood River Valley gap wind will be up the ante to 16-20. As this low moves onshore this afternoon, the wind will build to inconsistent 22-27 between Cascade Locks and Rufus. Under this setup, the Stevenson, Wunderbar and Avery areas will have the strongest, steadiest wind. Other areas will see periods of stronger wind speeds interspersed with lesser speeds.

That low pressure system will be well inland on Thursday morning with high pressure off the coast and a trough of low pressure and many marine clouds inland. Models suggest Cascade Locks will be socked in but Hood River will remain mostly clear. If that’s the case, we’ll start the day with Dawn Patrol at 24-28 from Swell to The Dalles. The wind will climb to 27-32 from Cascade Locks to Rufus in the afternoon with 23-26 at Arlington. If the clouds do happen to make it as far as Hood River, you’ll want to shift your location eastward to compensate. Either way, the wind will be strong near Hood River in the afternoon.

We’ll have just a touch less marine layer on Friday and more “things” happening around us. That’ll knock the wind down just a bit. Expect 20-23 from Viento to Hood River in the morning. In the afternoon, we’ll have inconsistent 22-26 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. As of right now, our friendly long-range and unreliable models suggest 20-23 Saturday, 23-26 Sunday, and 21-25 Monday. Just a reminder that I will be on retreat 7/29 to 8/2, so you will have to look out the window those mornings to see if it’s windy. =)

Random Morning Thoughts

After listening to my friends Ajahns Sudanto and Karunadhammo talk last night, I’m reflecting on the feeling of “wanting” this morning. When we want things, we feel discomfort around not having them. So we get that thing – be it the cookie dough I had for breakfast, the new board you just purchased, the latest iPhone – hoping to resolve that discomfort.

When we have our shiny new object or desired food, we consume it, and the wanting goes away for a little while. Then it returns again, perhaps in the same form, perhaps in a different form. Living in a consumption-based society (it would fall apart if we bought less stuff, after all), we see this as normal.

If you dare to question those feelings of wanting, you may find more. I love the idea the Ajahn suggested last night: just sit with the feeling of “I want” and don’t give in to it. See what other ideas arise. Notice your mind’s temper tantrum. See if you can separate from it just enough to be intrigued by the desires and thoughts, rather than enslaved by them. See if you can feel the commonality to all these wantings: “If I have this thing, the internal ache will go away.”

Nope, it will not. It will just resurface. It’s just a part of being human, and it’s a part you can hold with compassion while not giving in to desire. So, be wise in your consumption – not all materialism is bad. A lack of awareness around why you’re consuming… that is bad. Free your mind, free your wallet. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

There are some high clouds this morning from a low pressure system well to the south. They’ll be around on and off today, probably going away in the evening. Temps will be in the upper 60’s early and the upper 80’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks cooler: near 60 early and just above 80 in the afternoon. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Friday brings 60ish early and mid 80’s in the afternoon with moderate wind and no rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Still nothing new to report here. Oh wait, there is! Chenoweth Bridge in The Dalles will be closed for replacement from 8/1 to 8/30. That’s the bridge just west of the gas station at the west end of town. If you want to ride Sevenmile Loop, it is still possible by taking the waterfront path via the Discovery Center. Also closed for the next several months is Odell Creek Bridge at the west end of Dethman Ridge Road.

Upcoming Events

The Hood River Fair starts today, and the Hood River County Recreation Trails Committee has a meeting at 5 at the OSU extension office. Ladies kite and windsurf night is from 5 to dusk at the Event Site. There’s ping pong for $5 at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, sailboat races at the Hood River Marina, Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45.

Highlights for the rest of the week include the movie Mulan at Cascade Locks Marine park Friday evening, and the Dare to Live Music Festival at the Hood River Marina Park on Saturday evening. There are sailboat races Friday through Sunday in Cascade Locks. The laser Gorge blowout is Friday, and the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout, for all craft and skippers, has been rescheduled for Saturday.

At 6:30pm tonight, the Hood River Library is hosting a Death Cafe. Get together and talk about death and eat cake. I found this to be a fascinating event the last time I attended one, and I highly recommend it, especially if thinking about death makes you anxious. Remember that the Delta Aquarids meteor shower peaks Friday and Saturday night (10-20 meteors per hour). Click here for the full events calendar.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
