Wednesday. Last two days of summer?

dsc_1709_hdr
Wind forecasting this time of year is really tricky, as I’ve mentioned before. Much of the time, following gut instinct leads to better results than trusting the GFS model. Today is another one of those situations. We started off with a west gradient of .04 (pdx-dls) and a 1030mb offshore high. (Mixing my measurement scales again!) A weak weather system is forecast to skip on through later today. This combination suggests more wind later today than the 10-13 the models are predicting. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Let’s go with light and variable wind until mid-morning. At that point, we should have 12-15 from Steven’s Locks to Swell. By mid-afternoon, I think we’ll see 19-22 from Steven’s Locks to Bingen. Why Bingen and not Mosier? Because the wind didn’t quite make it to Mosier yesterday. That’s why! Locations east of Mosier will likely stay in the less-than-10 range today, although it’s possible the Rowena stretch will see 13-16 in the late afternoon.

Wednesday’s weak weather disturbance moves through overnight, leaving us with leftover winds on Thursday. We’ll start the day with 15-18 from Viento to Mosier. The wind will pick up to 24-27 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus. Wind quality will decline as the day goes on; an upper level low moving towards the Oregon coast will be the cause of that. In addition, the wind will eventually drop off at Stevenson as clouds move in.

Friday sees a broad area of low pressure off the coast. That’s the opposite of what we’d like to see. Fortunately, an approaching compact low pressure system will send some energy into the region in the afternoon. Expect morning wind at 11-14 pretty much everywhere. A possible exception is Steven’s Locks. In the afternoon, the wind will pick up to gusty 20-23 from Steven’s Locks to Rufus, with a brief 25-29 bump near Swell. Doug’s and Rowena will have the strongest wind on Friday with 25-29 likely.

Wind for the weekend currently looks light and variable due to a compact low pressure system right off the coast. The tradeoff of that is showers falling on the dry dirt.

Random Morning Thoughts

Looks like I’ve hit up against a time wall this morning. No thoughts. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

If you head north and west, you’re going to find tacky dirt and changing colors on the trees. If you head south, you’ll find dry dirt. If you head to Hospital Hill, you’ll find No Trespassing signs, because it’s still fire season there. If you head to Whoopdee, you’ll find the remnants of logging. If you head out on the road, you’ll find a lovely day for a ride.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday, which is also my favorite day of the week, even though there isn’t all that much going on. There is Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30 tonight. On Thursday night, there’s the Post n’ Pint (soon to be done) at 5pm. There’s community yoga at Samadhi at 6, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6:30, and mountain bike movies at Stoked Roasters at 7:30 ($3 cover). Coming up this weekend, there’s a friends n’ family cyclocross race in Post near Family Man to celebrate Jill’s birthday.

Have an awesome day today!
