Wednesday. C’mon winter, give us a break down here!

Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

It’s a partly cloudy morning on Mt. Hood, and will stay that way until the afternoon when some snow flurries move in. The snow level will be 500′ this morning and 1500′ this afternoon. We’ll see up to an inch of new snow by Thursday morning. Wind today will be light E early in the morning turning to W 10-15 by later morning and continuing through the rest of the day and evening.

Thursday may start off with a few flurries, but should turn clear by late morning. Another round of light flurries moves in overnight under partly to mostly cloudy sky. The snow level will be near sea level in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and back to sea level (across the region) after midnight. Total snowfall will be 1” or less. Wind on Thursday will be NW 10-15 all day and all night.

Weather models for Friday are in disagreement about the total amount of precipitation and whether it will or will not snow on Friday night. That said, there’s not much precip either way, and it does look like a mostly cloudy day. The snow level Friday will be at the surface for most of the day, rising to 500′ in the afternoon and falling back to the surface after sunset. Depending on which model you like, we’ll see 1-3” of new snow Friday evening. Wind on Friday will be W 10 early and S/SW 10 for the rest of the day.

Saturday currently looks cloudy and cold in the morning and clear in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be at the surface early and 1000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be light out of the S/SW. The GFS keeps us dry on Sunday, and the Euro brings in a round of light snow. So who knows what the weather will be!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday, and you can expect west wind at 5-10mph all day long through the whole Gorge. Thursday starts with W 7-10 and picks up to W 15-18 from Cascade Locks eastward to Arlington. Friday starts with light west wind and switches to E 15-20 as an upper level low moves off the coast.

Random Morning Thoughts

As a grad student and a member of the working millions, I often find myself strapped for time and stressed out. I’m guessing many of you experience the same thing from time to time. The sheer number of things we have to accomplish in our busy lives can be enough to overwhelm us, but then we go and pile beliefs on top of our real stress.

We do this on both a conscious and unconscious level. For example, we may tell ourselves that if we don’t get that work project finished on time, we may lose our job. That’s conscious (and not helpful – such speculation only adds to our stress). Our unconscious response to this situation may include, for example, a sense of dread. Our nervous system may be interpreting this as a threat to life, and that physiological response will intensify our reaction to a given situation.

If you’d like to tease this apart and perhaps free yourself from this cycle, grab a pen and paper. Make three columns. In the first, write the things that are causing you stress. In the second, write the thoughts you’ve having around the circumstances. In the third, write down emotions, bodily sensations, and old memories that arise.

Now you have a visual picture of why you’re feeling so damned stressed out over a given situation. Have fun playing with this. May you be free from suffering. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Expect a partly cloudy day today with sprinkles the in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s this afternoon. Light west wind. 76% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks partly cloudy with just a few scattered snowflakes in the morning and sprinkles in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. West wind. 16% chance of rainbows. There’s some disagreement in the models for Friday. First, temps will be in the upper 20’sw early and the upper 30’s in the afternoon, dropping back into the 20’s overnight. The GFS keeps us dry, and the Euro brings in an inch or two of snow for the Gorge overnight. Light west wind early. East wind in the afternoon and evening. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. I tried to go jogging in Post yesterday, but that didn’t work so well – there’s still a foot of snow there. I heard that Syncline is one big waterfall and stream, so please don’t mountain bike there or you’ll really do a lot of trail damage. There should be plenty of good road biking today. Go try that!

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday morning. There’s community meditation at Flow at 8:15. There’s community yoga at the FISH food bank at 10am. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30pm.

Have an awesome day today!
