Gorge Wind Forecast

Well hello everyone, and my apologies for taking the last two days off. That training in Portland was looooooong, and I took off for totality early yesterday morning. Anyway, we’re starting off with very little wind on this smoky Tuesday morning, but we’ll have westerlies by midday as a low pressure trough approaches to the north. By midday, we’ll have 13-16 out of the west between Stevenson and Swell – the wind will pick up first near Stevenson. Then we’ll see the wind build to up-and-down 21-24 after 2pm between Cascade Locks and The Dalles. Given the setup, I think it’s likely the Swell area will see a couple hours of wind in the 20’s followed by a crash into the teens. Hood River and Stevenson are likely to stay windier longer.

That low pressure system moves into Washington on Wednesday morning and a front approaches Oregon late in the day. All this stuff moving around will make for a windy but inconsistent day. We’ll start with west 21-24 between Viento and Mosier. The wind will build to rangy 24-28 between Cascade Locks and Rufus in the afternoon. Once again, the Swell area will likely see a couple hours of wind followed by a crash, while other locations will display more consistency.

The previously mentioned frontal system moves through the region on Thursday morning and high pressure builds offshore on Thursday afternoon. We’ll see clouds in the western Gorge early with 12-15 between Cascade Locks and Hood River with 21-25 further east. The wind will pick up and steady out later in the day with all locations between Cascade Locks and Rufus seeing 25-29 in the afternoon. Doug’s and Avery will likely be the windiest spots.

Friday currently looks like 15-18. Saturday’s questionable, with the GFS showing 13-16 early and no wind in the afternoon. If we do see 13-16 early, it’s likely it’ll hold through the day. Sunday looks like east wind at 15-20.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the ways to define trauma is this: a negative event that exceeds the processing capacity of an individual’s nervous system at a given point in time. Traumatic events often create long-lasting effects; this is mitigated by close personal relationships and the ability to receive support after an overwhelming event.

I would argue, based on what I experienced yesterday, that spiritual events impact the nervous system in an equally powerful, but opposite way. I could try and describe what it was like experiencing Totality, but it’s simply not possible. The experience was overwhelming in a positive and life-changing way.

As we go about our daily lives, we become accustomed to routine. Our minds, unless we counteract the tendency by learning to experience things moment-to-moment, settle into autopilot. This, I think, makes life feel safe and somewhat boring.

Experiencing something out of the ordinary, like an eclipse, shakes up the routine, perhaps. Life becomes more vibrant. We understand, on a cellular level, that unseen wonders still abound. Our hearts open to others. It doesn’t take an eclipse to access this higher spiritual plane; we just need to shake up our routines and look for the wonders around us. Life is awesome. So are you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Looks like the smoke has returned to the Gorge. Either than or someone took Mt. Adams away; I can’t see it from my window this morning. Anyway, temps will be in the mid 50’s early (open windows!) and near 90 later (close windows). Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks cooler with temps near 60 early and in the mid 80’s later. Moderate to strong west wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks even cooler: near 60 early and in the mid to upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows.

Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
