Tuesday. Wind, wind and more wind!

DSC_3717-Edit
We have officially entered “Classic Gorge Setup” land, with a week of wind in the forecast. Now, we all know that long-range forecasts are not reliable, but that comes into play most strongly when there are weather systems moving through. For now, we have strong high pressure in the Pacific and a heat low in the desert. Later in the week, a trough of low pressure will move over us too, but that won’t alter the general picture – it’ll just bring more marine clouds, making for even more wind. Yay! Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

One limiting factor will be the lack of deep marine clouds over the western half of the state, but there’s enough there to help keep Portland cooler than the desert, despite the Concrete Jungle effect. So, Tuesday starts off with .12 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc), enough for low twenties near Hood River and mid teens elsewhere. Expect 22-25 for Dawn Patrol from Viento to Mosier with 24-27 mid-morning on through the rest of the day, eventually filling in from Stevenson to Doug’s, possibly out to Rufus too. River temp is 64 degrees, and flow is 156kcfs.

Wednesday starts with Dawn Patrol at 22-25 from Viento to Mosier. The wind will pick up to 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon. As that low pressure trough moves in on Thursday, we should see more marine clouds. That sets us up for Dawn Patrol (I love saying that almost as much as I love doing it) at 24-28 from Swell to Mosier, picking up to 26-30 from Stevenson to Rufus. Friday looks like 26-30 all day.

As of right now, the notoriously unreliable long-range forecast has this windy-as-all-getup setup continuing through the weekend. That sounds great to me, and probably sounds pretty darn good to you too!

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

As evidence of the fact that cooperation, rather than competition, is good for society, I offer the evidence of the VanPool. When each of us drives to Portland alone, we lose time. We’re impacted by ODOT and the weather. We lose time, we use gas, and we put wear and tear on our vehicles.

When we work together and pile into one large vehicle (sadly not a White Sprinter Van), we gain time, spew less C02, and have the opportunity to chat and connect with one another. The energy we would have poured into driving (in traffic, no less), we free up to put into our work and relationships.

This doesn’t just apply to the VanPool, of course. Working together in the larger world teaches us how to connect with people who are not like us. Working together frees up time and energy for other projects. Working together lets us stop and enjoy the view (the Gorge is beautiful at dawn, you know), rather than being dragged along by the flow of time.

If you’re trying to do it all alone, find some folks who are on the same page, or at least in a similar book. Let them do it, whatever it is, with you. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

Not much to report here. You’ll find very windy conditions on the road for the next week or so. If you go up in elevation early in the morning, the wind will be less, so consider that when planning your rides. In mountain bike news, Gunsight is not clear of blowdown. As a matter of fact, it has a lot of blowdown. So thanks to the Strava rider who titled their ride “Gunsight is not clear”. In other bike news, the Post n’ Pinot women’s ride is tomorrow at 5:30 at Dirty Fingers, the Post n’ Pint is Thursday, Manny’s birthday Cyclocross ride is Friday. Mountain View has a women’s shop ride (alternating road/mountain) on Saturday morning at 9am.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include free community yoga at 4:30 at Flow in Hood River, pickleball at May Street Elementary at 5:15, Pickup Touch Rugby at Hood River’s Waterfront Park at 5:30, meditation at yoga Samadhi at 6:30, and free Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30.

Because it’s hot and windy, let’s talk sailboats. There are races Wednesday night in Hood River – if you’ve got some experience, show up and maybe you’ll get on a bat. Cascade Locks has a community sailing program on Thursday nights that’s just $5 per kid for the summer. Friday night is ladies night in Cascade Locks – bring your SUP or windsurfer, or bring $20 to use a CGRA sailboat.

Friday is First Friday in Hood River, Northwave Sails has an open house on Saturday, and Windance has a swap meet on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
