Tuesday. Wind, sun and wind and sun.

dsc_2985
It’s a windy Tuesday morning in the Gorge, and the following factors are coming into play: departing weak front, strong offshore high, morning gradients of .11 and .03. Models predict building inland high pressure today leading to zero wind by the afternoon. That doesn’t seem like a reasonable prediction, so I’m going to offer a different option. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Given the abundance of low clouds east of Hood River proper, I think we’ll see the wind build to 24-27 from Mosier to Rowena by late morning. Swell and viento will join in early afternoon with 24-27. Beaches east of The Dalles will see morning wind in the 13-16 range, likely bumping into the 20’s for a bit before fading back into the teens or single digits this afternoon. Cloudy Steven’s Locks will have 10-13 until sunshine arrives. At that point, Steven’s Locks should see wind speeds in the 16-19 range. Keep in mind that the models are predicting zero wind this afternoon, so this is a big bet against them…

Wednesday starts off with weak high pressure building inland. Models suggest we’ll see light and variable wind in the morning with afternoon westerlies in the 10-13 range. Offshore high pressure will still be quite present on Wednesday, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we actually see 17-20 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier.

Thursday sees a combo of offshore high pressure with an approaching low pressure system. This combination usually sets off gusty west wind in the Gorge. Models agree, giving us 15-18 from Viento to Mosier to start with gusty 24-28 from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon. Friday currently looks like gusty 23-26 as a weak weather system moves through.

Random Morning Thoughts

Hi. This is school-year Temira taking over for summer Temira. I’m having trouble shifting from summer mode into school mode. The last five weeks have been filled with beautiful bike rides, fruit gleaning and drying, time with friends, swimming in waterfalls, and pleasure reading. But now, school is starting again.

Change is inevitable, and change often brings a sense of loss. In these moments of change, we have a valuable opportunity to evaluate, on a deep level, the things that are important to us. Yes, I like cycling, but I really value being in awe-inspiring places. I find peace in the woods and near moving water. I like sharing my nourishing rides with friends. I like being fully in the power of my body. In this time of change, I worry that I won’t have enough time in my life for nature, connection with friends, or space to really push my physical being to a place of contented tiredness.

When we stop and explore what we worry about in times of change, we find clarity. We learn what’s really important to us. We can then create opportunities to fulfill these underlying needs in ways that fit into our current situation. For example, I can find beauty and awe looking out my window. I can settle into my physical body with a short, hard interval run, rather than a four-hour ride. I can spend less, but more focused time with friends, paying mindful attention to how much I love them.

The better we understand our deepest needs, the more able we are to fulfill them. Our world is a busy one. Making sure our needs are met within the confines of our busy lives will give us more equanimity to face the constant change. Your deepest needs are important. Evaluate your world and give yourself the power to meet your needs in flexible ways. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m happy to report that Plains of Abraham is open and in perfect tacky-dirt condition. Whoopdee is reportedly open, but I haven’t been up to inspect the impact of the latest logging. Plus, it’s not Whoopdee season yet. In road biking news, you’ll be much happier (less wind) tomorrow than today.

Upcoming Events

It is Tuesday, my favorite day of the week, or at least the day tied for favorite with Wednesday. There’s free community yoga tonight at 4:30 at Flow in Hood River. There’s $12 Prime Rib from 5pm to 9pm at Cebu. There’s pickup touch rugby at the Waterfront Park at 5, and there’s meditation with the monks of Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. This isn’t just meditation. It’s meditation followed by a dhamma talk. If you don’t happen to be a Buddhist, that’s a lecture about understanding your mind. You may not understand the Pali words that get involved, but you’ll understand yourself better by the end of the evening, most likely.

Have an awesome day today!
