Tuesday-Wednesday. It’s road biking season!

DSC_8970-Edit-Edit
It’s Tuesday morning, and I’ve decided to take tomorrow off from forecasting. So, here’s your forecast for the next few days. Tuesday started off with just a very slight westerly gradient of .01 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc). With a heat low headed for Portland and plenty of sunshine in the Gorge and the desert, we’ll see the wind go calm today. There’s a possibility of 5-10 or maybe even 10-15 near Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Steven’s Locks (Cascade Locks and Stevenson), but I wouldn’t count on it. Find a no-wind activity! Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Wednesday also looks quite light. We’ll see light easterlies at 5-10 or 10-15 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Steven’s Locks. If you’ve ever wanted to ride your bike from Wyeth to Portland, Wednesday will be a good day for it, as will Thursday.

Thursday looks slightly windier, as the heat low ramps up in the metro area. As of right now, it’s looking like we’ll see the east wind max out at 15-20 or 20-25 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock with 15-20 at Steven’s Locks.

Now, on to the long-range and rather unreliable forecast. It looks like the heat low will finally shift eastward late in the day on Friday, but probably not early enough to bring any wind. So, expect light and variable or calm wind on Friday. Saturday currently looks like gusty 24-28, and Sunday looks like 22-25. Still holding steady with the Year of the Weekend Warrior, aren’t we?

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

As I was sitting here this morning finishing up the forecast, I felt a pang of guilt seeing an unwritten thank-you card sitting on my desk. I stopped forecasting (we’re not in a big hurry today, are we?) and filled out the card, lifting a small burden from my inner world.

Writing notes and letters is a lost art. Email, however, has become a nuisance to many of us, something to be rushed through, cleared away and deleted. Even our snail mail has become mostly nuisance: junk mail, credit card offers, and come November, piles of political advertisements that are unlikely to change our minds in these polarized times.

A written letter caries a certain level of intimacy. Hand-scrawled notes say, “I care enough to take the time to pick up a pen, share my inner thoughts, and give you a piece of my soul on paper.” When was the last time you put this level of effort and vulnerability into a friendship? What would it be like to pick up a pen, paper, envelope and stamp sometime over the next few windless days? Give it a shot, and see what happens. There’s a pretty good chance the recipient of your letter will say, “I was so touched to receive your note…”

And if not, nothing ventured, nothing gained. You’ll have shaken up your world a bit by trying something new or old-and-forgotten. It’s calm and it’s going to be quite warm this afternoon. Write a letter and see what happens. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s so chilly this morning (51 degrees) that I had to close my window in front of my desk to write the report. Expect temps to climb to the mid 80’s today with calm wind and no rainbows. Tomorrow starts in the mid 50’s and climbs to the upper 80’s. Light wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks just like Wednesday.
