Gorge Wind Forecast

We’ll see a series of upper level low pressure systems move inland over the next couple of days, followed by high pressure over the weekend. This setup, especially the low pressure systems, isn’t all that conducive to reliable west wind. That said, for today, we’ll start with light wind in the western Gorge and 12-15 in the eastern Gorge. After this low pressure moves further eastward midday, the wind will pick up to gusty 12-16 in the western Gorge and gusty 23-27 east of Rowena.

Wednesday starts with another low pressure system moving inland. That’ll be accompanied by heavy rain. The wind will be light for much of the day. After 2pm or so, we’ll see gusty westerlies at 15-18 pretty much everywhere in the Gorge.

A weak low lingers off the coast on Thursday and low pressure also settles overhead. That gives us, at best, westerlies at 7-10 through the whole Gorge all day long under increasingly sunny sky.

The GFS likes the idea of very light west wind on Friday, but strong offshore high pressure might give us more wind than that. For now, let’s call it 12-15 out of the west after mid-morning. That’ll be under sunny skies.

Random Morning Thoughts

As much as I like sharing my thoughts, I like sharing my time with friends. I’m going for a jog and breakfast this morning, and if I don’t get on it, I’ll be late. Enjoy the rain, and have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s going to take a lot more rain that we’ve had so far to reopen the trails. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything! In the meantime, SDS and Kreps lands (Whoopdee, Underwood, Hospital Hill, etc.) remain closed. Hood River County lands (Post Canyon, Pine Mont trails, etc.) remain closed. The Mt. Hood Ranger district lands remain closed. Trails east of Old Man Pass (McClellan Meadows, eg) are closed. Indian Heaven Wilderness is closed. Trails along I-84 are closed. According to a reliable source, ridgelines in Post Canyon were used to build contingency lines for the Eagle Creek Fire, so trail reconstruction and salvage logging will need to happen in some areas. Thanks for your patience while we wait for more rain to fall. I’ll let you know as soon as I know if anything opens up!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events are pickup touch rugby at 5:45 at the Hood River Marina and meditation with a dozen or so monks at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. These are meditation teachers with over 100 combined years of practice, so it’s worth attending if you can. Coming up Thursday night, the kiteboarding movie “the Bubble” premiers at the Skylight Theatre, and the local organization Rivers For All has a launch party at All Adventures Rafting.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
