Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

The last couple of days have been an interesting learning experience in the effects of an unstable atmosphere and convection on wind in the Gorge. Saturday saw several convective cells move through, causing a short period of strong wind near the Hatchery. Yesterday came out just opposite: all the convective debris floating around kept the wind speeds well below model forecasts. I’m honestly not sure how possible it is to be truly accurate when the atmosphere is unstable; the best way to forecast under those conditions may be to simply acknowledge them!

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Anyway, on to today’s forecast. We’ll see a relatively stable setup for much of the day, followed by a weather system that approaches late in the day. With gradients of .11 (pdx-dls), .04 (dls-psc) and .45 (eph-dls), we’re looking at a decent day on the river. Expect 12-15 from Viento to The Dalles this morning, picking up to 21-24 midday and 26-30 this afternoon. The strongest, steadiest wind shall be from Viento to Mosier this morning and from Stevenson to Rufus this afternoon. Arlington will likely join in with low 20’s mid to late afternoon, and Swell/Hood River, as usual, will likely back off a bit late afternoon. In addition, this afternoon weather system may have a detrimental effect on the wind, so play early if you can.

Tomorrow starts off with more marine clouds in the morning and stronger gradients. During the afternoon, a trough of low pressure will move east, so expect a bit of feistiness in the wind quality late in the day. That said, you can expect 22-25 from Viento to Doug’s right off the bat with 27-31 in the afternoon everywhere from Stevenson (unless it stays cloudy) to Arlington.

Thursday looks warmer and lighter as high pressure starts to rebuild. Expect 10-13 early and 13-16 in the afternoon. Friday looks similar. Cooler weather and therefore a better chance for stronger wind is predicted for the weekend, but we really need to wait a day or two before tossing out numbers.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/15-20/25-30, NW 3 @ 7. Tomorrow: 5-10/10-15/25-30, NW 3 @ 7. Thursday: 5-10/20-25/35-40, NW 3 @ 9.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 22-25. Jones tomorrow, 20-23. Jones Thursday, 16-19. Sauvie’s today, 7-10. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 7-10. Sauvie’s Friday, 9-12.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m a little groggy this morning – I hosted a couchsurfer a couple of nights this week, and I don’t sleep all that well with strangers in my house. That’s my problem, not the couchsurfer’s, and I’d encourage you to sign up for Couchsurfing.com and host people – you’ll meet cool folks and earn good karma. Couchsurfing, btw, is what people did before Air BnB – they let people stay for free instead of charging them. Anyway, in looking for something nice to say this morning, I asked myself, “What’s alive in you today?”

And all I got back was tired, grumpy irritation. So I sat with that for a bit and realized that I’m just a little sleep deprived. And I thought about how nice it would be to crawl back into my squishy, cozy bed with my fluffy down comforter and my huggable bear. And then I smiled ‘cuz I felt better.

Sleep’s important. Get enough of it, and you’ll feel as good as it’s possible to feel on a given day. No, really. Don’t shortchange yourself on sleep. If you can’t get enough rest, maybe you can imagine being curled up in bed. You know… that moment at the end of the day when the bed holds you. Or the moment when you wake up cozy and relaxed. Spend a little time in your mind in those moments, and you’ll feel, if not more rested, at least a little more content. Visualization, my friends, is powerful.

That’s what I learned this morning while I groggily sipped my coffee: 1) sleep’s really important. 2) imagining being cozy in bed is good too. 3) coffee is no substitute for sleep, but it’s almost as nice as being curled up in a cozy pile of blankets. 4) couchsurfing > airbnb. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

There’s a massive change in the weather since yesterday. You can tell this by the color of the sky. It was pink last night, and it’s blue this morning. Expect sunshine today with temps in the mid 60’s early and low 80’s this afternoon. Increasing wind will climb into the strong category by later today. Tomorrow looks sunny with temps in the low 60’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. A trough of low pressure moving across the PNW late may bring some clouds. Strong wind. Thursday looks sunny and warmer with temps in the low 60’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows for the 72 hour period.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s cool and not all that windy this morning, and that means it’s a great day to get on the trail or on the road. It’s going to be quite windy by afternoon, and it shall be windy tomorrow, so ride today or wait for less wind on Thursday. Tonight’s the Post n’ Pinot women’s MTB ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, and tomorrow is the race-pace Post n’ Pint at the same time. Tomorrow night at 5pm, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair and bike washing party behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. If you have a used bike taking up space in your world, bring it down and donate it, and they’ll get it to a kid in need.

Royal Anne Organics: U-Pick Dahlias & Seed garlic

Sometimes you just need a big bunch of flowers. Maybe you need some cheer. Maybe a friend needs some cheer. Head to Hood River U-Pick off Markham Road (4320 Royal Anne Drive) and pick your own big bouquet of flowers. While you’re there, check out the certified organic seed garlic at the same location. Garlic is easy to grow, it’s fun to harvest, and even your black thumb can’t kill it. Haven’t gardened before? Garlic is a great first plant. Get some now and give it a shot!

Upcoming Events

Events today include a community yoga class at 8am at Flow Yoga. At 5, the Hood River County Recreation Trails Committee has a meeting at the OSU Extension Office (thanks to one of my subscribers for setting me straight on that one!). At 6, there’s pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina and Triathlon Practice at Mayer Park. Manbo’s Fun Ride leaves Mt. View Cycles for Mosier at 6:15, and there’s free yoga at the Mosier Senior Center at 7.

Tonight at 6:30, there’s mindfulness meditation and philosophy talk at Yoga Samadhi with the monastics from Pacific Hermitage. If you’d like a little more calm and clarity in your life, this is a good starting place.

Tomorrow night is families at Family Man at 5:30 – bring the kids for mountain biking and pizza in Post Canyon. Also at 5:30 tomorrow: the women’s Post n’ Pinot ride at Dirty Fingers, whitewater paddling on the White Salmon at Husum, and ping pong at the Hood River Armory.

Sushi Okalani has their 10 year anniversary party at Springhouse tomorrow night. It’s $5 or 3 cans of food to get in the door. Proceeds go to FISH food bank in Hood River.

On Thursday Night, bring the kids to the Anson’s Bike Buddies bike washing and bike repair party at Cascade Eye Center in Hood River – the entire family can help fix up bikes so they can go to kids in need, and if you have a spare bike, bring it to donate to the cause.

We’ve got sailboat races Friday through Sunday in Cascade Locks, and on Saturday night in Hood River, the movie Surf’s Up snows at Jackson Park at dusk. Coming up next Friday, the 14th, the Princess Bride plays at Cascade Locks Movies in the Park.

Have an awesome day today!
