Tuesday. Last chance for westerlies for a while. Make the most of it!

DSC_2853
Well, I skipped the windsurfing on the way to school yesterday and went to a yoga class at the PSU gym instead. And that’s okay, because we’ll all have a chance to get on the water later today with some west wind. The 7am gradient (hey, I got home from school at 11pm last night) was E .05, but there wasn’t much wind to go along with it. What easterlies there are will quickly fade as a warm front approaches the PNW during the day today. We’ll see westerlies at 13-16 by noon or a little later from Stevenson to Hood River. The wind will pick up to 20-23 late afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles, possibly out to Rufus and Arlington too. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with a few leftover westerlies at 5-10 or so, but the wind will fade to the calm-to-nothing range by midday, leaving you with a nice setup for paddling, rowing or road biking. There won’t be any wind on Thursday either. With a lot of dynamics in the picture starting Friday (the remnants of tropical storm Oho, to be exact), there’s not much reliability in the long-range models right now. So… let’s hold off on forecasting further out.

Instead, I will forecast for other places. Like the coast. Today: S 10-15, NW swell 2′ @ 7 seconds. Tomorrow, S 5-10, W 3′ @ 10 seconds. Thursday, S 5-10 or LTV, SW 4′ @ 8 seconds.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: no wind at either of those places for the next three days.

Random Morning Thoughts

Epigenetics was the lecture topic in one of my classes yesterday. Basically, epigentics goes like this: you’re born with a set of genes. Some are turned on and making proteins, and some are turned off and not making proteins (and that can depend on where in the body they are). The on/off switch, methlyation, is subject to environmental influence, both nature and nurture. (to the chem/bio/science folks out there, I’m simplifying for clarity!)

What you eat, whether/how much you exercise, your living environment, the amount of love and nurturing your receive, what’s in your water, the level of stress in your life, your consumption of intoxicants… all these things affect which genes are turned on and which are turned off. In twin studies, the difference in epigenome (expressed genes) is dramatic as people age; young twins have very similar sets of expressed genes while older twin pairs have very different sets of expressed genes.

This is a complex and scientific way of saying that it’s important to take care of yourself. What you do, what you eat, and how you live your life will impact you on a genetic level. And… It is possible to reverse the effects of previous self-care mistakes by practicing good self-care now.

Be kind to yourself. Eat well. Exercise a reasonable amount. Take steps to reduce stress in your life. Meditate. Spend time with people who care about you. Love yourself. Do these things, and you will impact your gene expression in a positive way. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another amazing day that started out with an amazing sunrise. We’re about to see a brief change in the weather: a warm front will approach the PNW and move through tonight for high clouds this afternoon and a chance of sprinkles. Expect sunshine this morning with temps in the mid 40’s and increasing clouds as the day goes on with highs in the mid 70’s. Light wind early, moderate westerlies late. No rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off partly to mostly cloudy with a few spirnkles possible. Then we’ll see sunshine in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. No wind. 1% chance of rainbows early. Thursday starts off with temps in the mid 50’s and a very, very good chance of the Nothing. We’ll have a sunny afternoon with temps in the mid to upper 70’s. Light wind, no rainbows. Friday looks super muggy. So does Saturday.

In case you were curious, the remnants of tropical storm OHO will swing by the Oregon coast on Saturday, likely missing us and nailing Vancouver Island with a ton of rain. As a matter of fact, the Euro model is predicting many, many inches of rain on VI over the next week as an atmospheric river (aka Pineapple Express) hits it dead on. We’ll get sideswiped, likely on Saturday, with some rain. Maybe even a solid drenching.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s looking increasingly likely that we’ll see some rain late in the day on Saturday (and maybe a trace tonight or tomorrow morning), so there is the possibility of a tack alert in the next week. In the meantime, it looks not-windy in the Gorge, so the road biking should be great!

McCurdy Farms, Hood River

Need pears? Need apples? Need a suggestion for a good bike ride around here? The McCurdy Farms fruit stand halfway up Peggy’s Roost Hill (2080 Tucker Road, just below Portland Drive) has the best prices on the best fruit and the best ride suggestions too. Fruit prices are $.50-$.75/lb for beautiful pears and apples. Cycling advice is free. They have lots of my favorite pears, Comice. Maybe they have your favorites too. Stop by and say hi to Natalie and Craig when you ride by on your Valley Loop bike ride. Come back later for lots of fruit and suggestions on other rides. McCurdy Farms – the secret fruit stand not on the Fruit Loop map. Visit today.

Upcoming Events

Tonight is $12 Prime Rib night at Cebu. It’s also pickup touch rugby at 6pm at the Hood River Marina. There’s triathlon practice at Mayer Park at 6pm (that’s gotta end soon – Mark?). There’s free Zumba tonight at 6:30 at the Community Center in Parkdale, and there’s Community Yoga at the Mosier Senior Center at 7pm. Tonight is my favorite event: community meditation with our local monastics from Pacific Hermitage. 6:30pm, Yoga Samadhi, free, no pressure, totally chill mindfulness meditation followed by Ajahn Sudanto’s random evening thoughts and question session. Two thumbs up for that one.

Have an awesome day today!
