Gorge Wind Forecast

Let’s recap yesterday: models suggested east wind at 10-15, but reality provided west wind at 10-13. We have a similar situation today, where the 12k and 4/3k GFS are both predicting a zero-wind day. However, reality is starting the day with a westerly gradient of .07 from Portland to The Dalles and west wind at 5-10 or so. River temp is 69 degrees and flow is 132kcfs this morning. A low pressure system far to the north moves eastward this afternoon, possibly providing a little nudge upward to the wind. So, let’s go with a slow climb to 12-15 midday from Cascade Locks to Swell with 7-10 from Hood River to The Dalles. We might see a late afternoon bump of a couple extra mphs. Remember, models are predicting almost no wind today, so this is all guesswork and local knowledge.

A low pressure system in California moves inland tomorrow, bringing slightly cooler air to the western half of Oregon. Moderately strong offshore high pressure and a heat low in the desert combine to enhance onshore flow. We’ll start the day with 19-23 from Viento to Swell. By midday, we’ll have westerlies at 23-26 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. That wind should hold through the evening.

A deeper marine layer on Thursday morning enhances the onshore flow. We’ll start the day with Dawn Patrol at 24-28 from Swell to The Dalles. By late morning, we should be seeing 27-32 from Viento to Rufus. Cascade Locks will probably start the day in the clouds with 12-15, but the wind will rise to 23-26 there and Stevenson when the clouds burn off. Arlington and Roosevelt are going to be a little too far east for the strongest wind, but they should still see 22-26 on Thrusday afternoon.

Long-range models suggest 21-4 all day Friday, 13-16 Saturday, and 22-25 Sunday. The Blowout has been rescheduled for Saturday, FYI. Also, I will be on retreat 7/29 to 8/2 and unable to post a forecast. I apologize for the disruption.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m looking out my window this morning feeling utterly delighted by life. Beautiful view, cool air blowing in the window, a vacation on my horizon… as I was thinking about these things, I was reveling in the pleasant sensations arising in my body.

And then I realized that, of course, there was zero connection between the sensation in my body and the outside events, except perhaps for the in-the-moment sensation of the breeze on my skin. All that happiness, it was just arising from inside me as I sat here working.

Sure, there are things outside of us that can create the conditions for happiness to arise. But the potential is always there. It’s hard-wired into our neurons. It’s possible to train our cells to make the “happy” neurons fire more than the “unhappy” neurons.

Spend time placing your attention on the stuff that makes you happy. Simple stuff that’s likely to happen on a daily basis. Put less time and energy into focusing on negative stuff, or set aside a specific time to focus on the painful stuff and let it go (as much as you can) for the rest of the day. By doing this, you’ll train yourself to notice the good things more often. It’s a positive feedback loop that will improve your life. That said, the unpleasantries of life are valid too – they train us to be more present, more real, and more compassionate. Don’t discount their power. That’s all. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s going to be a hot, hot day today with a touch of the muggy, so unless you’re after Bikram-style biking, get out early! Still no word on SDS/Kreps closures, so keep riding everything.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with a good way to escape the heat. Dirty Fingers Bike Shop is sponsoring a float down the Klickitat River. Bring an innertube or other floaty toy, a helmet and PFD, and join the fun. Meet at Dirty Fingers at 12 or at the Lyle trailhead (parking lot?) at 1pm. There’s pickup touch rugby tonight at the Hood River Marina at 5:45 and meditation at Yoga Samadhi, led by the monks from Pacific Hermitage, at 6:30.

The Hood River County Fair kicks off tomorrow, the Hood River County recreation trails committee meets at the OSU Extension Office in Hood River at 5:30 tomorrow, and there’s a pop-up mountain bike gear sale at Clutch Hair Company at 6. Also tomorrow: ladies kite and windsurf night at the Event Site starting at 5, ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, sailboat races at the Hood River Marina at 6, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6, and YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45.

At 6:30pm on Wednesday night, the Hood River Library is hosting a Death Cafe. Get together and talk about death and eat cake. I found this to be a fascinating event the last time I attended one, and I highly recommend it, especially if thinking about death makes you anxious.

Friday’s day one of the Columbia Gorge One-Design Regatta in Cascade Locks, and Friday’s also the Laser Gorge Blowout race. The Delta Aquarids meteor shower peaks Friday and Saturday night in the southern sky in the constellation Aquarius, and the Sandy Ridge Super D is Sunday. Click here for the full events calendar.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
