Tuesday. Cold. Cold. Cold. Frozen waterfalls, frozen chicken stock, and frozen bike trails.

Random Morning Thoughts

A bunch of totally random stuff:

In a disappointing turn, it’s still in the 20’s this morning in the Gorge, and the wind is only in the 20-30 range at Rooster, giving me very little to complain about to my therapist today. I told her during the last cold snap that if I had to deal with single digit temps one more time that I was going to huck myself off the bridge. She didn’t believe me. Smart lady. When it’s that cold, it’s too cold to walk out on the bridge. I’d rather just cuddle up with my teddy bear and a good book.

Anyway…

In a more interesting note, the pressure models suggest we’ll get up to 1050mb today, which would set a record for highest high pressure in these parts. I have no idea how that will impact us, but it’s interesting. Also, remember that there will be frozen waterfalls this week, so make time to go see them. And one last thing, I put my chicken stock outside last night, and it’s frozen, so this is a good time to make large quantities of things and put them outside to cool.

Mt. Hood Snow

There’s not much happening in the way of snow in the Mt. Hood forecast, but at least it’s interesting up there. The free air freezing level today will be at the surface, with temps at 5000′ in the single digits early and the low to upper 20’s in the afternoon, depending on elevation. Wind will be NE 30 in the morning and NE 35+ in the afternoon.

Wednesday looks clear and warmer, with temps between 20 and 30 in the morning, rising to right around freezing in the afternoon above 5000′. Wind will be N 20 all day. Thursday looks warmer and more humid, with low clouds possible. Temps will be in the low to mid 30’s above the inversion (4000′?) with N wind at 15-20. Friday looks even warmer, and possibly partly cloudy. No precip ’til Sunday, at the earliest, and at this point it looks like sprinkles, not flurries, but it might be nothing at all.

Gorge Wind

I don’t see my nuking east winds. Where are they? Oh, right. They are at the top of Cascade. Anyway, expect easterlies to pick up to 40-50+ at Rooster today. Expect 40-50 again tomorrow. Expect east wind at 30-40 on Thursday.

Gorge Weather

It’s going to be in the mid 20’s today in the Gorge with sunshine above and a bit of east breeze (but nothing like yesterday’s nuking easterlies). Cold n’ clear. No rainbows. Wednesday starts with temps in the teens and sees upper 20’s in the afternoon. I think it’ll still be clear on Wednesday. No rainbows. Thursday will probably also be clear, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see an icky inversion cloud develop, given the moistening airmass above. Temps will be in the teens early and the low 30’s in the afternoon. No precip through the week, at least not on this model run.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s official. The freeze alert is on. You’ll find AWESOME frozen dirt out there. Go get some before it thaws. And remember, it may be below freezing, but the power of the sun will melt the dirt to mud. Ride early. Last time it was around this cold, I started Whoopdee at 11am and it was too late. I ended up with 5lbs of mud frozen to my bike. So ride early, ride often, and ride in the trees where you’ll do the least damage. As for road biking, only Marcroft will be out today. Marcroft and Bergh, maybe. If you’d like to keep your hands warm, pick up a pair of Bar Mitts, keeping Temira’s hands from turning white for the past year.

The Gym is my Gym – The Power Station

Let’s face it: sometimes the weather is too cold/wet/grey to use the Gorge as your gym. That’s when you head to the Power Station. Good vibe. Lots of friendly coaches. And free 10 Speed Coffee. Plus, it’s warm there. Turn off your heat, take off some of that technical clothing, and come hang out in the gym. The gym is your gym, for a little while anyway!

Upcoming Events

Happy Tuesday. It’s butt-ass cold out there. Well, maybe not quite that cold, but it’s pretty cold. It’s definitely cold enough to use the Gorge as your freezer or your fridge. Your choice. The real question is… is it cold enough for me to transport Melona bars on top of my car from Portland and have them stay frozen? You can play rugby tonight at the May Street baseball fields at 5pm. There’s a trail run at 6:15pm at Post Canyon with the Tri Club folks. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu 5pm-9pm tonight. Coming up tomorrow, there’s a 5k race in Stevenson at 9am, followed by a dip in a creek (that part’s likely canceled). And there’s a polar bear swim at Maryhill Park on New Year’s Day. Maybe.

Have an awesome day today!
