Tuesday. Another beautiful California day in Oregon. Beat the heat by hitting the water!

DSC_4755-Edit
It’s a delightful start to the day on the river with plenty of gradient and a few marine clouds in the Portland-Vancouver area. Although the setup looks perfect, and the weather models are predicting wind, there are a couple weak weather systems moving into BC today. They carry the potential to disrupt our wind today. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

The 7am gradients were .11 (pdx-dls), .03 (dls-psc) and .33 (eph-dls). That’s enough for moderate westerlies today, but we’re already seeing less wind on the water than is to be expected with those numbers. Normally I’d call mid-twenties with this setup, but I’m going to bump it back to 13-16 this morning and gusty 17-21 this afternoon, strongest from Viento to Mosier early and Stevenson to Doug’s late. Maryhill and Arlington look to join in with 15-18 after 5pm. If we do end up with a period of non-disrupted wind it’ll be late morning; 21-24 is possible then, most likely at Stevenson and/or Viento.

The Columbia is flowing at 139kcfs (average for this date is 362kcfs), and the river temp is 70 degrees.

Models show 15-18 tomorrow morning with zero wind for the rest of the day. I’m going to ignore then and say we’ll see a brief spurt of 12-15 for Dawn Patrol followed by 10-13 for the rest of the day. Thursday looks like 10-13 early and 22-25 in the afternoon, strongest near Hood River.

In the long-range-don’t-trust-it forecast, Friday looks like 26-30, Saturday looks like 26-30, and Sunday looks like 13-16.

Jones and Sauvie’s beta test forecast: Jones today, 22-25. Jones tomorrow, 16-19. Jones Thursday, 16-19. Sauvie’s today, 15-18. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 15-18. Sauvie’s Thursday, 13-16.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: 15-20/20-25/35-40, SW swell 2′ @ 16 seconds. Tomorrow: 20-25/20-25/30-35, NW 5 @ 7. Thursday: 15-20/20-25/30-35, NW 5 @ 7.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m a big fan of attachment theory. Your eyes just glazed over. No, seriously. It’s cool. Attachment theory talks about our unconscious expectations from all relationships. Each of us moves through the world in a different way, not realizing that our expectations about people might be out of line with reality. After all, our expectations come from our experience.

One of these’ll probably resonate with you: 1) I expect people to be reliable and trustworthy and to support me when I need help. 2) People are unreliable. Sometimes they’re they’re for me, and sometimes they’re not. 3) People? Useless. I don’t need them. I can support myself. 4) People are going to hurt me.

About 50% of the population is lucky enough to relate to the world in terms of statement number 1. But guess what? Statement number 1 is your right as a human. And knowing in your soul that it’s true has the power to change every human interaction in your life. How do you shift from 2-4 to 1? By being conscious and aware when you are experiencing positive connections with others. Bask in those moments and remember them for the times when you’re trapped in the fictions of #2, #3, or #4. People are awesome. Your friends do care. And you are worthy of love and support.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We’re going to have a little bit of aftcast this morning (that’s the opposite of fore-cast, right? Fore and aft?). Anyway, if you haven’t seen it yet, Blaine Franger’s photos of yesterday morning’s lightning storm are amazing. What’s not amazing is the eight new wildfires added to the NWCC large fire map in the last 24 hours.

Back to the weather… Expect a lovely day today with less humidity than yesterday. Temps will be in the upper 60’s early and the low 90’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off nice and cool with temps in the low 60’s. Open those windows and doors and save that cold air for later, because it’s going to be in the upper 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind. Thursday looks just like Wednesday with possibly a touch more wind.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went running out of my house at 6am yesterday in anticipation of tacky trails. When I arrived at Post Canyon, I found that the rain missed the bulk of Post. It was still dusty. I suspect Whoopdee, Syncline and Hospital fared better. Hopefully you found some tacky dirt somewhere! Remember that we are at IFPL III right now. No moto riding. Also, if you are on forest land, you need to carry a gallon of water and a shovel or a 2.5lb fire extinguisher. Another consequence of the fire danger is that Kreps and SDS lands close next Thursday, so no Whoopdee or Hospital after that until fall.

Upcoming Events

If you don’t have plans tonight, there’s pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:30. You have two choices at 6:15 tonight: there’s triathlon practice at Mayer Park in Rowena and there’s Manbo’s fun ride – that one goes from Mountain View Cycles to the Union Taphouse in Mosier for dinner and drinks. You’ll need a helmet and a light to join that ride. If you want something mellower, there’s community yoga at the Mosier Senior Center.

If you want mellower and more spiritual, join 20-30 folks and the monks from Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samadhi this evening for a 30-40 minute mindfulness meditation followed by some sort of interesting talk on some aspect of spiritual practice. It’s a lovely community, and you may be pleasantly surprised if you come check it out.

Tonight at 12:01am, recreation marijuana becomes legal in Oregon. If you would like to understand what is legal and what is not, visit the What’s Legal Oregon website. If you’re not too high to move, coming up tomorrow night at 5:30, there’s family mountain biking at Family Man in Post Canyon. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory, there’s the women’s post n’ pinot ride at Dirty Fingers, and there’s a whitewater paddle on the White Salmon at Husum. Half an hour later, there’s sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina.

Coming up Sunday, there’s a swap meet at Windance, and Anson’s Bike Buddies will be taking bikes on consignment for a bike swap for the day. They’ll also be taking donation bikes and parts for a tax writeoff, so if you have an old bike in the garage, even if it’s not working, bring it to Windance Sunday morning.

Have an awesome day today!
