Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s still not much to talk about in the snow forecast, unless you’re planning on installing a ski resort with a base above 6500′. That said, we can still talk about the forecast and get excited, right? Expect a partly to mostly cloudy Tuesday morning followed by r**n after midnight. The snow level will be 6000′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ after midnight. We’ll see about .5” rain between midnight and 5am Wednesday. Wind Tuesday will be SW 20 early, light SW midday, and S 15-20 after midnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Heavy rain continues on Wednesday, all day, with periods of light and moderate rain mixed in. The heavies rain will be in the morning, but the rain won’t stop until, well, it won’t stop on Wednesday, that’s for sure. Anyway, the snow level will be 10,000′ Wednesday morning, 8500′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ after midnight. We’ll see around 2” of rain in that 24 hour period. Wind on Wednesday will be SSW 20 early and SW 30 for the rest of the day.

Thursday brings more rain with some wet snow mixed in at times. The snow level will be 6500′ all day, dropping to 6000′ after midnight at which point the precip will be pretty much done. We’ll see around 1” water value on Thursday, pretty much all of which will fall as rain. Oh goodness, why am I hedging? It’s going to be all rain with just a bit of sloppy wet snow mixed in. Maybe a light dusting at T-Line base at the end. Wind on Thursday will be SW 5-10 all day.

As of right now, there’s nothing in the forecast to indicate a big snowfall at any of the ski area bases in the next week or so. Enjoy the mountain biking and waterfall viewing this week!

Gorge Wind Forecast

A series of low pressure systems will rotate off the coast for the next week or so. That will limit the ability of the Gorge to produce west wind. We will see some easterlies, but we’ll also see quite a bit of rain. For today, Tuesday, we’ll have east wind at 10-15 or so at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Steven’s Locks all day. Wednesday starts off with pouring rain and east wind at 35-45. The wind will decline steadily as the day goes on, ending up with E 10 by 5pm. Thursday starts light and variable and picks up to E 20-25 before fading to light and variable wind in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today’s Gorge Happiness activity is to smile at someone you don’t know. I love this activity, because we can use it as an opportunity to study our expectations about interactions with others.

Some of us will simply smile at everyone who walks by. We’ll say “hello” or “good morning” or “cute dog”. Some of us will look for cues as to the stranger’s state of mind, only saying hello if we judge them receptive. Some of us walk down the street in a bubble, staying disconnected from the people who are just feet away.

On some level, this speaks to our differentiation and self-confidence. Do we feel sure enough in our own being to smile or say hello to others? How do we react to their response? Do we blame it on ourselves, or do we interpret their response as reflective of their internal experience?

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not sure that it’s “right” to say hello to everyone. On some level, this is a cultural phenomenon (for example, people in Taiwan seem to smile, nod and say hello much more frequently than people from the PNW, and people in Japan seem to do this less). I do think upping the number of friendly interactions is good for our well-being and the well-being of society.

So give it a shot today. Smile at several people you don’t know. Up the ante and say “hi”. Notice your reactions to the responses you receive. Not only might you make someone’s day, but you’ll learn more about your awesome self. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s dark as I write this forecast this morning, so it must be cloudy. Or maybe the sun went out. Anyway, expect a mostly cloudy day with scattered sprinkles and rain developing after midnight. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s this afternoon. Light east wind. .08% chance of rainbows. We’ve had 4.72” of rain so far this month. Wednesday will add a significant amount to that total. Expect heavy rain from 5am to noon followed by light to moderate rain showers. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. East wind. 14% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks dry early with light to moderate rain after 3pm. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 7% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a nice lap in Post Canyon with a friend yesterday, and the dirt was just a touch wetter than perfect, but still pretty amazing. Then it rained, so now Post is slickery. Try Syncline, Whoopdee or Hospital for a less slippery dirt lap. And get it now, because tomorrow’s rain will end it for a while. In road biking news, the wind looks light and so does the rain today. Next chance? Thursday morning.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s free yoga at Flow at 4:30 and at HAVEN (Strong Women Yoga) in The Dalles at 5. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5 at the Hood River Marina Park. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30 this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi with Ajahn Sudanto of Pacific Hermitage and 20-30 of your best meditation friends. This remains, and most likely always will, my favorite activity of the week.

Coming up Saturday, the movie Room to Breathe shows at the Columbia Art Gallery. This flick is about a school in California that replaced detention with meditation. Should be good. 5:30pm, Saturday evening.

Have an awesome day today!
