Gorge Wind Forecast

Today started with large whitecaps outside my window, a good sign for a Columbia River playday. At 6am, gradients stood at .14 between Portland and The Dalles with another .07 further east. River temp is 69 degrees, and flow at The Dalles is 144kcfs. There’s not a lot of “stuff” happening in the atmosphere today, a good sign along with strong high pressure offshore and low pressure in the desert. Dawn Patrol wind was ranging from the single digits (cloudy Cascade Locks and sunny Arlington) to the low 20’s from Viento to Hood River (and probably Mosier too).

We’ll see the wind build quickly to 27-31 by mid to late morning between Viento and Hood River, with Mosier possible as well. By early afternoon, the clouds should burn off in Cascade Locks, allowing wind west of Viento to climb to 23-26 or so. Beaches between Lyle and Rufus will hit 27-31 early this afternoon, and Arlington will climb to 23-26 today. If you do decide to head further east than the 97 junction, know that SR-14 is closed due from the 97 junction eastward due to a wildfire at milepost 141.

Friday also looks windy, but a bit more inconsistent. An upper low to the north and a weak wave offshore raises the specter of some ranginess in the wind field. That said, it will still be a nice day to get on the water; marine clouds in Portland and hot weather in the desert will keep the wind blowing. Early morning wind should be in the 21-24 range between Viento and the Wunderbar. The morning will likely be the steadiest wind of the day; afternoon westerlies of 20-25 between Cascade Locks and The Dalles will probably be a bit more inconsistent, but still plenty good for you to hop in the river.

Temps warm up a bit across the region on Saturday and gradients drop across the Cascades. We’ll have 15-18 between Viento and Hood River to start the day (10-13 at Cascade Locks) with inconsistent 21-24 from Cascade Locks to Mosier in the afternoon. The Rowena area will probably just see 13-16 on Saturday afternoon. Sunday currently looks to max out at 23-26 in the western Gorge. The long-range forecast is hinting at a maybe day of 11-14?? on Monday and light wind with very warm weather Tuesday. Just a reminder that I’ll be on retreat with no internet between Friday afternoon and next Wednesday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was at a yoga class a while back, and I was looking around at the variety of bodies in the full room. I noticed myself thinking, “Wow, that person has a great body…” Along with that thought, I noticed all sorts of judgments, expectations, and assumptions about myself and the rest of the people in the room. In that particular moment, I realized the foolishness of this. I also felt the holding power of these ideas.

Sure, there’s an aesthetic component to beauty – symmetry, for example, is recognized worldwide as contributing to beauty. Other body descriptors – size, shape, color, proportions – these are culturally bound.

We have the power to change how we experience and react to the bodies of others and to our own body.

If you feel inspired, try this mind hack: each time you notice a negative thought arising about someone’s body, set it aside and create a new one. My favorite is this: “That body has loved and been loved by many people.” For myself, it’s this: “This body is strong and athletic and brings all sorts of joy to my life.”

I believe it’s important, for ourselves and our children, to counter the single-image beauty concept that we see in the media: men must be ripped, and women must be skinny. This narrow concept of beauty causes all sorts of anguish for people who don’t match the ideal. It also impacts us by creating internal bias, and thus less desire to connect, with the wide varieties of bodies in the world. We miss out! Your body is a good one that serves you well, or you wouldn’t be reading this forecast. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

Still nothing new to report here. Oh wait, there is! Chenoweth Bridge in The Dalles will be closed for replacement from 8/1 to 8/30. That’s the bridge just west of the gas station at the west end of town. If you want to ride Sevenmile Loop, it is still possible by taking the waterfront path via the Discovery Center. Also closed for the next several months is Odell Creek Bridge at the west end of Dethman Ridge Road.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
