Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday turned out to be a very windy day on the river, and hopefully lots of you made it out. I want to share two reports from the Rufus stretch of river. First, a very competent kiteboarder who lost her board reported that the current is wicked strong and people should be careful. Second, a very competent windsurfer reported that the swell was great yesterday. So, it appears that the waves are not being impacted by the massive current (439kcfs), at least not when it’s nuking windy. However, the current is very strong, and you should only attempt it if you have expert-level skills. I can add to that the fact that I saw someone get washed far downstream at Rowena yesterday, despite the current being much less there than near Rufus. River temp, before I forget, is 55 degrees. 5358 spring Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday. (continued below the chart)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Now that you have all that information, let’s talk about the wind that we won’t have over the next several days! When I woke up around 6am, the gradient was .07 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). I think we can safely say, given the extent of the clear sky, that areas east of The Dalles, despite the morning gradient, are not going to be windy this afternoon. The western Gorge is a little trickier – the GFS insists that the wind will completely die off midday and return late this afternoon. I’m not sure I agree with that, given the clouds in Portland this morning. I think it’s more likely we’ll see 13-16 or a touch more all day at Swell, and likely eastward to Mosier as well (the gate there is still closed). Once the clouds burn off, Stevenson will join in.

The GFS insists that the next three days will bring light and variable wind to the Gorge. Given the fact that Portland is expecting sunshine and high temps in the mid-80’s or more for the next few days, light and variable wind seems like a reasonable expectation. That means you should bring your road bike, SUP board, mountain bike, tanning equipment, whitewater rafting equipment, kayaking equipment, and fishing gear (is it fishing season? I have no idea!) if you’re coming to the Gorge this weekend.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The only thing worth mentioning today is the chance of thunderstorms this afternoon in the mountains. Repeat that chance, but make it a lot stronger, for Monday.

Random Morning Thoughts

Almost all of us have things we are ashamed to speak out loud. We may be hiding something we’ve done, something we’ve experienced, a belief we hold about our self, a belief we hold about the world or others… the possibilities of what we hide are endless. Shame keeps us silent, because we fear rejection if we allow our darker parts to be seen.

When we hide parts of who we are, we diminish our capacity to fully engage in the world and with others. There will always be a tiny unconscious voice expressing the fear that we are broken and must stay silent about the objects of our shame. That voice, while convincing, is just plain incorrect.

When we speak about the things we keep hidden, and our truth is received with compassion and kindness, we can move through the world with more confidence. When we realize we no longer have to hide parts of our personality, we accept that we are merely human – complex and multifaceted. The hard part is finding the courage to combat shame and speak our truth to a witness. Give it a shot sometime with someone you know you can trust (or a therapist, because most of them don’t accept the concept of TMI). You might just find the peace you’ve been seeking. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another sunny day! There’s a slight chance of thunderstorms over the Casade Crest today, and the GFS is showing rain from the Columbia River northward this afternoon. So just keep that in mind! Temps will be near 50 early and just over 70 this afternoon. Moderate west wind. 8% chance of rainbows. 97% chance of a colorful sunset. Friday looks sunny. Temps will be near 50 early and near 80 in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Ditto on Saturday with the high near 85.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I don’t have any additional updates, so let’s go through the need-to-know stuff again: Rowena Curves are closed due to a rockslide and hill stabilization efforts. No dogs are allowed on Hospital Hill until the cattle are gone, and several trails are closed due to logging: Innerwoods, below the bench, and roads leading to Innerwoods. There’s a work party on the Pine Mont trails on Saturday. The Sisters Stampede, which is supposed to be quite a hoot, is on Sunday.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start off with a free dance exercise class at the Whtie Salmon grange at 11am. Then this evening, there’s the Dirty Fingers mountain bike shop rides: the post and pint is a race-pace ride, and the post n’ pinot is an all-levels, women’s only ride. Both leave Dirty Fingers at 5:30, and both earn you a free pint of beer for finishing.

There’s also a by-donation yoga class at Samadhi tonight at 6 and Tai Chi at Our Saviour Church in Bingen at 6:30. Tomorrow morning is the run that earns you more calories than you burn – the Kickstand Coffee donut and coffee run – jog or walk four miles, and you’ll earn a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Have an awesome day today!
