Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

There’s a little more wind this morning that I thought we’d see, as gradients sit at .06 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc). Expect 15-18 this morning at many location all the way from Viento to Arlington. The eastern Gorge wind will back off quickly, leaving us with 17-20 midday from Stevenson to Doug’s. The wind will pick up to 20-23 this afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus.

Friday starts off quite light, with less than 10mph. By early afternoon, we’ll see 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier. As a weather system moves in, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty, first at Stevenson, and then moving east beach by beach. Expect the wind to die at Stevenson as the low clouds fill in.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Saturday starts off light and variable. As the previously mentioned weather system moves east, we’ll see the wind pick up. This kind of setup is going to give us gusty, up-and-down, hard-to-predict wind. That said, expect 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier with rather unreliable 23-26 east of Mosier, strongest after 11am. Sunday looks light and variable to start with gusty 15-18 in the afternoon.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: Light S, W swell 3′ @ 16 seconds. Tomorrow: light and variable, W 5′ @ 16. Saturday, LTV early. Afternoon: S 30/S 25/S 10-15, W 8′ @ 16.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 10-13. Jones tomorrow, 5-10. Jones Saturday, rainy 10-13. Sauvie’s today, LTV. Sauvie’s tomorrow, LTV. Sauvie’s Saturday, S 5-10.

Random Morning Thoughts

DSCF0260
My friend Ajahn Sudanto was giving his Random Evening Thoughts talk on Tuesday night, and mentioned something that comes up for me a lot: I have to admit that I was sitting with something else he’d said, and missed the beginning, but the last part of what he said was about comforting oneself. His technique (one of many, I’m sure) is to bring up the image of a loving mother figure giving him a hug. I was pretty stoked to hear him say this; I do this a lot, and it’s powerful.

When we feel sad or angry or betrayed or helpless, we can feel ungrounded, unsupported, alone and overwhelmed. The unpleasant feelings can seem like more than we can handle, they can feel endless, and then we can spiral into depression or massive anxiety. The DSM would label you as mentally ill for these feelings. I suspect, in most cases, that they’re the result of a very old love deficit. And love deficits can be reversed. I promise. That’s why therapy is so powerful. Anyway…

One way to mitigate tough feelings is to let them be joined by pleasant feelings – do what Sudanto suggested. You can imagine a parent figure, a friend, an animal, nature, or anything else that’s brought you comfort in the past. Imagining incoming love can’t make the pain go away, but it can make it lessen. More importantly, the wave of positive emotion can bring hope that the unpleasant stuff will end. Love can exist side-by-side with sadness. Happiness can exist in the presence of betrayal. Anger can co-exist with comfort.

And it’s the co-existence of all these feelings that makes us grown-up human beings. May you be well, may you be loved, and may you be happy. May you also have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear out there this morning with just a few high clouds signalling incoming change. Expect a few high clouds today with temps in the upper 60’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind early becomes moderate late.

Tomorrow starts off with some high clouds and becomes increasingly cloudy as the day goes on. Temps will be in the low 60’s early with no wind and will pick up to the low 80’s in the afternoon with moderate wind. Rain should start by midnight, although it’s now looking like the heavies rain will stay west of Hood River and taper off by 11am Saturday. No rainbows Friday.

Saturday starts off with showers, light wind, and temps in the upper 50’s. We’ll see low 70’s in the afternoon with decreasing showers and moderate wind. 97% chance of rainbows Saturday morning.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s relatively light wind out there this morning, and it’s not going to pick up until the afternoon, so it’s a nice morning for a road ride. The trails, still dusty, will get some moisture starting late Friday night. Cross your fingers that it’s enough for a change. In other bike news, the Dirty Sellwood, 100+ miles including a bunch of gravel, is coming up soon. Contact Dirty Fingers for more information.

Upcoming Events

Today is Thursday, and that means there’s a by-donation yoga class at 8am at Flow, and another at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi. Tonight at 5:30, it’s the Post n’ Pint mountain bike ride at Dirty Fingers. Do it, and you will receive a free pint of beer.

Tomorrow morning at 7am, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run. 4.1 miles of jogging gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut, more calories than you will burn, but so much fun that it doesn’t matter. Tomorrow’s also the first day of Pacific Crest Trail days in Cascade Locks. There’s a PCT work party from 10-4, and lots of booths (like 50) showcasing backpacking gear. Tomorrow at 7pm, there’s the Picnic in the Park in White Salmon, and tomorrow at 8:30am, you can walk across the Bridge of the Gods like the PCT hikers do. There’s a SUP race in Washougal on Sunday morning.

Have an awesome day today!
