Thursday. Rainy to the west, windy and sunny to the east. Enjoy!

DSC_2882
This morning (Thursday) started off with bigger gradients out east than in the western Gorge. To be more precise than that, we had .07 (pdx-dls) and .10 (dls-psc), indicative of a better day further east than in the cloudy and potentially sprinkly western Gorge. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect 10-13 from Viento to Mosier early with 16-19 eastward from Lyle to Arlington this morning. By the afternoon, as a weak weather system moves in, we’ll see gusty westerlies at 24-28 from Rowena to Arlington. We’ll probably see the wind jump to gusty 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon too. River water temp is 63 degrees, flow at The Dalles is 150kcfs, and 2288 Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday.

Tomorrow starts off with another partly cloudy start, but high pressure will start to build in during the afternoon. Given that, we’ll start with 0-13 (I meant to type 10-13, but zero will be closer to the truth at Stevenson early, so let’s go with it!) from Stevenson to Hood River early with 15-18 east of Mosier. In the afternoon, the Stevenson to Hood River stretch will rise to gusty 22-25 and beaches further east will have 24-28.

Models have been all over the place for the wind on Saturday and Sunday, and that’s to be expected with two wind-dependent demos this weekend. CGWA has the Beach Bash at the Event Site, and Windance is planning on a kite demo somewhere, to be determined.

Anyway, as of this morning, models suggest 10-13 Saturday morning, perhaps 12-15, dying in the afternoon. However, I’m not buying that “dying” part, and I think we’re likely to keep what we start with, at least through mid-afternoon. Sunday currently looks like east wind, exactly the opposite of what models suggested yesterday. That, I suppose, leaves us with a wait-and-see day to end the weekend.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was talking to a friend on the phone a while back, and she was having a rough time of things – she was quite distressed. As we were chatting, she was telling me about an experience with her therapist. This experience was unlike anything my friend had encountered in therapy before. As she talked about this truly disturbing, but intriguing experience, I heard her calm down. I heard her excitement. I could hear her smiling. The switch from distress to curiosity, to engagement, was nearly instantaneous.

Our distress and curiosity systems are, to a large extent, mutually exclusive. When we’re afraid, angry, confused, irritated, etc, we lose our curiosity and our desire to explore the world. It’s possible to use this knowledge to trick ourselves into a better place.

How do we do that? Well, first try summoning up some anger or distress, but make it something you can get yourself out of – don’t summon up something that will trap you. Now summon up some curiosity about that state. Create some wonder in your mind about why you feel the way you do. Explore how you know you feel that emotion – where is it in your body, exactly what does it feel like, etc. Yeah, that’s it. Totally engage your curiosity to study your distress.

Because the systems are somewhat exclusive, you’ll find yourself feeling different, if not better. Of course, it might not work for everyone, but it might work for you. Curiosity is some powerful stuff. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 708 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

I have this idea that it’s really nice on the trails in the woods right now. And I have this idea that I’ll go and check it out later. In the meantime, you need to go check it out for me. That’s your task. Everything but Gunsight and Boulder Lakes are open for you. And in road biking news, this morning, the weekend currently looks lovely, with light wind.
