Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s looking good out there this morning: mostly clear sky in Hood River, marine clouds to the west of Hood River, a .12 gradient between Portland and The Dalles, and another .03 out east. Speaking of out east… I have no idea WTF happened out near Maryhill yesterday afternoon – the wind jumped to 40mph at one point. WEIRD! Anyway, today’s a day of not-much-happening in the upper atmosphere, a good setup for long-lasting west wind.

In a surprising twist, early-morning wind was in the 14-18 range everywhere except the far-east Gorge. Given the little fluffy marine clouds outside my window, I think it’ll be windy all the way between Cascade Locks and Rufus today. By late morning, we should have 23-27 between Viento and Mosier. By early afternoon, the wind will fill in at 23-27 between Cascade Locks and Rufus.

Friday looks less consistent due to the approach of a weak weather system. We’ll start the day with 15-18 near Hood River. By afternoon, the westerlies will pick up to 24-28 between Cascade Locks and Rufus. These are going to be rangy and inconsistent westerlies. The steadiest, longest-lasting locations will likely be Stevenson, the Wunderbar, and Avery. Mosier might also be a good choice. That said, other locations will have wind; you’ll just want to jump on it as soon as it looks like the wind speed you’re after.

Saturday’s weather picture is even more complicated than Friday’s: low pressure trough overhead, a weak weather system moving through, more marine clouds… That’s going to give us a 16-19 start near Hood River with gusty 21-25 from late morning on through the afternoon between Stevenson and The Dalles. Looking at Sunday, it seems the wind will likely beat the models – it’s that sort of setup. For now, I’m thinking 16-19 all day, strongest near Hood River. Monday looks like a similar setup where models won’t be that reliable. It is starting to look like the Willamette Valley will be cloud-free on Monday morning for the eclipse, but we’ll have to keep an eye on that as we get closer.

Random Morning Thoughts

It can be hard for people who aren’t impacted by racism, misogyny or bigotry to understand what it’s like to experience displays of hatred. I would like to share a bit this morning. I’m a person of Jewish descent. My ancestors left Poland and Russia during the Pogroms, where Jews were killed, raped and oppressed.

In the 1940’s my relatives watched from New York as flag-waving Nazis exterminated six million Jews in Europe simply for being born of a certain ethnicity. We survived because we were here. We survived because previous waves of violence had driven us from our former lives to the USA, where we had to start new lives from scratch.

When I see people waving Nazi flags, I am afraid. I feel unsafe. If someone walked past me with a Nazi flag, I know they would be looking at my brown eyes and my curly hair and wishing me ill. I know this flag-waving “American” wants me dead, gone, without even a chance to get to know me as a person.

When I hear people chanting “Jews will not replace us,” when I hear the president of my country saying there are good people marching with white supremacists and Nazi sympathizers, I no longer feel safe. I worry that anti-Semitism will be allowed to flourish. I worry that I, with my Hebrew names, will become a target.

The fear isn’t overwhelming, by any means. I am strong, and I am willing to speak up. But the events of recent days have shaken my view of this country, my place in it, and my leaders’ willingness to protect people of Jewish descent, people of color, and anyone who might be targeted by those “good people” waving Nazi flags. That is all. I hope your day goes well.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
