Thursday. Hello from OR-izona, where 90 is the new 70. Hot weather and plenty of wind.

2014-11-09_16-07-34 M=C
This morning is much like yesterday morning, with a .07 (pdx-dls) gradient and very little wind on the water. It took a little while yesterday, but the wind did end up beating the models, which were predicting glassy conditions all day. The Gorge took issue with that and went with 10-13 from Viento to Swell for much of the day. As I was driving to Portland, I saw quite a few downwind SUPers, so perhaps that’s the call again today! Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect less than 10mph for a couple hours this morning before that gradient brings the wind up to 10-13 midday and 13-16 late this afternoon. You’ll find the strongest wind from Viento to Swell this morning and from Stevenson to Doug’s this afternoon. It’s possible we’ll see a late afternoon bump to 15-18.

Tomorrow looks like a day that will hold something for everyone. Expect westerlies at 13-16 for Dawn Patrol, building to 24-28 by mid-morning from Viento to Mosier. Expect 28-32 in the afternoon, likely strongest at Doug’s, but quite possibly, given the stable weather setup, extending all the way from Stevenson to Doug’s. Maryhill/Rufus should join in with 23-26, and Arlington should see 15-18 late in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was in class at PSU last night and my professor was cracking jokes about legal marijuana. I don’t know if you’re having trouble wrapping your head around this still, but I am. Weed has been so hush-hush for so many years that I’m still shocked to hear it discussed openly. Anyway, enough about pot. I’m sure we’re all about to see, hear about, smell, touch, give and receive more marijuana than we ever thought possible.

Speaking of giving and receiving… Something about giving came up about giving during the reflection the other night at Yoga Samadhi… We all like to think of ourselves as generous people. We give time and money to charity. We help our friends move. We give and give and give and… oh, suddenly giving doesn’t feel so good. It starts to feel like a burden and not a choice, eh?

When we give with an open heart, we receive the recipient’s gratitude in return. That feels good. If we feel something other than gratitude when we hand over our time, money or energy, something’s not quite right. It’s not that something is wrong with us, although one argument is that we need to look at our underlying motives and understand why we’re feeling resentment or some other painful emotion.

I like to interpret this more gently: if we’re not feeling warmth and gratitude when we give something, we’re not giving to the right person or organization. Our pain upon separation from our time or money is a signal. Find the right recipient, and you’ll only feel joy. And then you’ll truly understand what a gift it is to be able to give, whether you’re giving away time, money or marijuana.

Gorge Weather Forecast

PDX has already seen 10 days above 90 degrees, which is well above seasonal norms. I stole that one straight from NWS’ AFD this AM. If you would like to look at the daily highs, lows, and averages, you can do so near the bottom of the Hood River Weather website. And if you like all that nice information and the chat room that Larry’s collected, make a donation by clicking on his paypal button.

Back to today’s weather, expect temps in the upper 60’s early and the upper 90’s this afternoon. The heat is on, for sure. Light wind early, moderate late. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks similar: temps in the mid 60’s early and the mid 90’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind early, strong wind late, no rainbows. The 4th of July brings temps in the low 60’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Just a reminder for 4th of July weekend: it’s dry as a bone out there, and we are at IFPL 3. No moto riding. In addition, Kreps and SDS lands closed for the summer this morning due to fire danger, so no more riding Whoopdee or Hospital Hill until further notice. If you are driving on forestland, you’ll need to carry a gallon of water and a shovel or a 2.5lb fire extinguisher.

Upcoming group rides include tonight’s Post n’ Pint, converted to a “let’s go swimming ride” due to the heat. Tomorrow morning at 9am is the Mountain View Cycles women’s beginner ride, and Sunday afternoon at 5:15 is the after-work ride from Mountain View.

Upcoming Events

Today is Thursday. That means there’s a community yoga class (foundational flow style) at Flow Yoga at 8am. The regularly scheduled Thursday hammerfest, the Post n’ Pint, has been restyled this week as a swimming ride. Meet at Dirty Fingers at 5:30 for a mellow ride to someplace wet. There’s community yoga at Yoga Samadhi tonight at 6:30.

Tomorrow morning at 7am is the Kickstand Coffee Run. 4.1 mile, 1 free donut, 1 free cup of coffee. Why wouldn’t you? Tomorrow evening is First Friday in Hood River. Saturday, the 4th of July, is the Kollas Cranmer Memorial Run from Odell to Hood River (about 7 miles).

On Saturday afternoon starting around 1pm, White Salmon has their annual Independence Day party with lots of kids’ activities. Also on Saturday at 1pm, Pacific Hermitage has their Interdependence Garden Party. They’re sprucing up the grounds for the arrival of Very Important Visitors from Thailand that afternoon. If you enjoy the company of self-aware folks and you enjoy philosophical discussions, you’ll enjoy this event.

Coming up Sunday, there’s a swap meet at Windance, and Anson’s Bike Buddies will be taking bikes on consignment for a bike swap for the day. They’ll also be taking donation bikes and parts for a tax writeoff, so if you have an old bike in the garage, even if it’s not working, bring it to Windance Sunday morning. On Sunday evening at Yoga Samadhi, there’s a special meditation and talk by a senior monk from Thailand. No enlightenment is promised, but aha moments are likely.

Have an awesome day today!
