Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The snow forecast for the weekend includes two mountains: Timberline and Meadows! But you’ll have to wait until Saturday for that. For Thursday, Mt. Hood will see continued light snowfall. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 2500′ in the aftenroon, and 1500′ after midnight. Approximately .3” water value (WV) will fall during the day, for 3-4” of snow. Another .2” WV will fall overnight, for 2-3” of light, fluffy accumulation. Wind Thursday will be SW 20 all day and W 30 after midnight.

Friday sees orographic show showers in westerly flow. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ all day. We’ll see .4-.5” WV during the day, for 4-6” of powder. Just a trace will fall overnight. Wind will be W 30 all day long and SW 10 after midnight.

Saturday currently looks partly cloudy early and sunny for most of the day. No snow accumulation. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ in the morning and 5000′ in the afternoon, potentially rising quite high overnight. Widn will be SW 10 in the morning and SW 20 in the afternoon and evening.

The GFS and ECMWF are pretty far apart on temps for Sunday into Monday. They agree on incoming precipitation, but not so much on the details. The precip will likely start out as rain late Sunday afternoon, but the details after that are unclear.

Random Morning Thoughts

I have an unexpected few hours free this morning. For a grad student, that’s like having a full-on vacation. Freedom! Yay! This is particularly awesome, because I, like many of you, have been feeling stressed out lately by all my responsibilities and time commitments.

A few hours (or a few minutes) free doesn’t seem like much in the grand scheme of things. We can make that free time have more impact by being fully present for it. Let’s make this more concrete: I know that my day is really full starting around noon. Between now and then, I have five hours of freedom.

I can choose to dread my busy evening, or I can choose to set aside thoughts of this evening and focus on enjoying this morning. I can choose to relax into this free space. Each time I think about this evening, I can redirect my thoughts and feelings to enjoying my free time. I only have to do this for a few hours. After noon, I can go back to dealing with the rest of my busy day.

You too can do this. Your worries are not so important that you can’t take a short break from them. Even a few minutes of fully experiencing something less stressful will allow you to cope better with the stresses. Can’t think of anything less stressful? Think about your last fun day on the river or mountain. Relive a few minutes of that. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s really too wet to ride trails right now, especially Post Canyon. If you are riding, you’re doing damage to the trails, damage that volunteers have to fix rather than building new trails. If you are guilty of riding in the mud, please show up at the trail work party on Saturday, 9:30am at Family Man.
