Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday’s midday burst of upper 20’s did a number on the Eagle Creek fire, sending it three miles eastward and prompting increases of evacuation levels along I-84 and also on the west side of Hood River. There is no imminent danger to people in Hood River at this time, but firefighters would like residents in the Level 2 are to be ready to get out of their way if things get worse. The wind today looks good for fighting fires. Humidity is up and the wind is down. Models are predicting very little wind today. Given the .04 early gradient and offshore high pressure, I think W 10-13 near Swell with 5-8 in other locations today seems fair.

Friday’s models predict light westerly, 5mph or so, in the morning, with light easterlies at 5mph or so in the afternoon. We’ll see if that really pans out – the overall picture looks more conducive to light westerlies all day long.

An upper level low pressure system approaches from the north on Saturday while high pressure remains offshore to the south. The current model run suggests W 5-10 early with E 15-20 in the afternoon. It’s quite possible we’ll see surface wind of light westerly and upper flow of E 15-20. We’ll have to keep an eye on this. Models are predicting light easterlies early Sunday with west wind at 16-19 late in the day. That afternoon west wind will be accompanied by rain after 1pm or so!

Random Morning Thoughts

I wasn’t going to say anything at all because I have a busy day and a lot on my mind. Just for fun, I took out a little piece of paper, actually a leftover tab from a booklet of snopark permits, and made a list of everything I’m stressing about right now. Some of these things, like the wildfire and I-84 closure, are pretty big.

After I wrote all these things down, I laughed. They are so small that they can be contained on a piece of paper that’s approximately 4 inches by 4 inches. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m still stressed. But I feel a bit lighter having walked through this process – that piece of paper seems inconsequential in the face of the natural beauty in front of me, the honor I feel in writing this forecast, and the community that has welcomed me.

I don’t know if writing a list of your troubles on a tiny piece of paper and noticing all the bigger things around you in this moment will take away some of your stress. But it’s sure worth a shot. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon, Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, Underwood, and all other trails on Hood River County, Kreps, and SDS lands remain closed due to extreme fire danger. All ridgeline trails in Post Canyon, according to a reliable source, will be impacted by fire suppression efforts including cutting of 30-40′ wide firebreaks.

Falls Creek is now closed from the top due to fire. Everything you can ride along I-84 is currently closed or inaccessible. Open trails in the area: Syncline, Buck Creek, Nestor Peak, and anything along the 44 Road. McClellan Meadows trail and other trails that leave from the top of Old Man Pass are closed. Falls Creek Trail is open from the bottom but is closed above the Horse Camp. All campfires and smoking are now prohibited in the Mt. Hood National Forest and Gifford Pinchot, and the Mt. Hood Forest is now at IFPL 4.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
