Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Synopsis: Sunshine on Sunday, sunshine on Monday with rain after 10pm, light snowfall Tuesday, snow-rain-snow on Wednesday. Monday night is Hood River Rotary Night at Meadows with $20 tickets to benefit Rotary. Looks like the weather will be cloudy and precip-free until the lifts close.
For Sunday, we’ll have a sunny day on the hill. If you are below the clouds, head on up. Meadows has free shuttles from the Hood River Event Site if you don’t want to deal with their parking lots. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 12,000′ on Sunday. Wind will be 10mph out of the south.
Monday starts off clear and turns cloudy in the evening. Light rain starts up around 10pm and switches to light snow after midnight. The snow level will be 10,000′ early, 8000′ when the precip hits, and 4000′ after midnight. The mountain will see 1/10” to 1/4” rain. That will be followed by 1-3” of snow. Wind will be S 10 in the morning, S 15 in the afternoon, SW 25 in the evening, and SW 20 after midnight.
Tuesday sees very light and intermittent snowfall under cloudy sky during the day and partly cloudy sky overnight. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning and 3000′ in the afternoon. Just .1” WV falls, for an inch of new during the day. Wind will be SW 20 during the day and SW 10 in the evening.
Wednesday starts off with high clouds and a beautiful sunrise. Precip starts around 10am. The most likely scenario as of right now is snow-rain-snow on Wednesday. The snow level will be 3000′ ealry, 4000′ when the precip hits, 6000′ at the peak of the precip, and 3000′ overnight. Best guess is 2-3” snow followed by 1/2”-1” rain followed by 3-5” snow. Wind will be SSW 10 early, rising to SW 30 in the afternoon, SW 20 in the evening, and W 30 after midnight, which will contribute to orographic accumulation.
Both the ECMWF and the GFS predict light snowfall on Thursday and Friday, but the forecasts diverge after that. So… no long-range forecasting is possible.

Random Morning Thoughts

If we want to stay emotionally healthy, one of the most important things we can do is stay in touch with what’s happening with our emotions. We’re all busy. If you’re not busy, stop and let yourself be grateful for that. When we are busy, we sometimes push our painful emotions away to “deal with later”. This might not be fully conscious, but it’s something we do.
When we do that, our original emotion can grow or morph into something bigger, darker, and more complex. We can save some future suffering by taking a moment with our emotions. This can be quite simple. Say you’re in the store and experience annoyance at the check writer in front of you. You’re mad because they’re delaying everyone around you and they don’t seem to care!
Sit with this for a moment and see what else is there. Perhaps you’re anxious because you have very little time. Perhaps you’re afraid because you can’t control this situation (or other people’s reactions in general). Don’t engage with what arises. Just watch it. It’ll change, move through, and leave you feeling something else. Sit with that too. By the time you’re done with this process, it’ll probably be time to pay for your groceries!
Watching your emotions as they arise rather than tucking them away for later will save you future suffering. You will also come to know yourself better, allowing you more freedom from those same emotions. Give it a shot. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.
