Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Sunday morning, and I’m seeing some whitecaps on the river in front of my house already. With the early morning gradient at .10 (pdx-dls) and low pressure forecast to move into the eastern half of the region during the day, those whitecaps will get bigger and more numerous. First off, today is the Blowout, so be prepared for lots of downwind traffic between Stevenson and Hood River. Yield the right-of-way to the racers, please!

We’ll see a steady build in the wind today from a start that’s in the 17-21 range from Viento to the Wunderbar with 12-15 to the east and west of that stretch of river. The far east, Roosevelt area, will remain light until late afternoon, when a light breeze of 10-13 will arrive. As I said, we’ll see a steady build to 25-29 from Cascade Locks to Doug’s by early afternoon. It’s likely the Rufus stretch will join in as well. Although the early afternoon may be a touch rangey/inconsistent, models suggest things will steady out by mid afternoon. Fingers crossed. River temp is 68 degrees and flow is 153kcfs.

Low-level flow becomes strongly northerly on Monday, making the coast (nuking) and Sauvie’s (quite windy for Sauvie’s) the places to be. The GFS suggests the Gorge will have very light wind for most of the day with just 5-10 in the afternoon from Cascade Locks to Hood River. I think there’s a pretty good chance the wind will beat the models tomorrow, so I’m going to toss out 12-15 in the afternoon from Cascade Locks to Hood River.

The GFS is predicting just some light east wind on Tuesday as an area of low pressure equalizes the pressure on both sides of the Cascades. That seems pretty fair to me, but I still wouldn’t be surprised by some light westerlies late in the afternoon.

Cross-Cascade gradients pick back up on Wednesday, assuming the timing works out right, giving us early morning westerlies at 21-24 and afternoon westerlies at 26-30. The long-range forecast currently suggests wind through the weekend, but there’s also a chance of a hot spell and no wind. So, don’t go trusting that long-range forecast. I will be on retreat from the 29th of July through the 2nd of August. I’ll get you as much info as I can as I head into that. Self-care, yo.

Random Morning Thoughts

We learn about ourselves from our childhood experiences. That’s pretty much agreed upon by people who study such things. The big arguments come in when we make a case for how to change the things we learned as children.

I believe that our “core beliefs” – how we perceive, judge and compare ourselves – are most effectively changed by having outside experiences that differ from those beliefs. For example, if I learned in childhood that I’m not loveable, that belief will change most quickly by others loving me. If I learned that the world is a safe place, that belief will change most quickly by having experiences of the world being dangerous. In psychotherapy, we’re trying to change negative and painful self-concepts. I also like to highlight and reinforce positive self concepts.

Sadly, our culture was built upon a bedrock of humility. We may feel uncomfortable acknowledging the strengths of others or sharing our positive feelings about them with them. Doing so violates a social norm. I believe that this contributes to the stuckness and depression of many people.

After all, if you believe positive experiences are the path to greater self-acceptance (as I do), then a cultural norm that limits such positive feedback will limit growth and healing. So, let’s bust through those social norms. Tell people what you appreciate about them. If you receive feedback, let yourself enjoy it. We deserve to know we’re good people. Our friends deserve to know this too. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Everything’s open and getting dustier by the day. If you have any pull with Mother Nature, schedule us some rain in about two weeks after the cherry harvest is done. I rode the 44 Road trails yesterday, and they are in surprisingly good shape for this late in the season. Also, the Sandy Ridge Super D is next Sunday.

Upcoming Events

The Blowout’s the big event today, but we also have the weekly community events: free yoga at Samadhi at 9, YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4, and a restorative yoga class at 6 at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s family-friendly pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina today at 11.

Coming up next week, it’s the Hood River County Fair. Next weekend is the peak of the Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. Friday’s the Laser Gorge Blowout, where little boats with expert skippers try to make it from Cascade Locks to Hood River. The Columbia Gorge One-Design Regatta is next weekend in Cascade Locks, and the Sandy Ridge Super D is next Sunday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
