Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Wednesday starts out sunny and cold with temps in the teens. Clouds move in during the afternoon. Snow starts up around 7pm. This is a really tricky forecast, as the incoming system is warm enough to support rain up to 6500′ or so for a period of time Wednesday night. We’re going to have to wait until we get closer to make a for-sure call. As of right now, I think we’ll see a few inches of snow, a couple tenths of freezing rain, and a switch back to snow midday Thursday.

In a happy turn of events, the gully-washer rain event that was originally in the forecast for Friday has totally disappeared. After the freezing rain stops on Thursday, we’ll be back to all snow, all the time through Sunday morning.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Sunday, and we’re starting off with gradients of .08 and .08. Expect a quick rise to W 23-26 east of the clouds, probably Rowena eastward, with gusty 14-17 from Steven’s Locks to Mosier. The wind should last through mid-afternoon. Monday starts off with calm wind and picks up to W 8-12 mid-morning. Tuesday brings light east wind to start, increasing to E 40 at Rooster and Steven’s Locks after midnight. Expect east wind at 50-60 on Wednesday and Thursday.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine shared a really awesome life hack with me a couple of days ago, and I thought I’d pass it along. Many of us like to put sandbags in our vehicles during the winter. It’s possible to go out and buy sandbags, but they tend to be fragile, especially if left in the back of a pickup truck.

My friend told me to get some discarded innertubes from the tires shop, cut them in half, fill with sand, and ziptie the ends. Voila! Durable sandbags that don’t leak, don’t decay, and are there for you to slash open and use for traction if you get stuck. As an added bonus, you’re reducing, reusing, and recycling.

We should all do more of that RRR, and this is just one more way to keep paying it forward for the planet. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s raining out there this morning. The rain will taper off to showers around 11am and pick back up after 9pm. Temps will be 43 degrees all day long. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Monday looks interesting… Let’s call it snow above 500′. River level is going to be borderline – with light west wind in the forecast by midday, it’s going to depend on just how cold this incoming air mass is. For now, let’s call it snow early with a mix of light rain and snow all day long, with snow likely early in the morning. 1-3” above 500′. Light west wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks cold and dry with an ugly Nothing cloud in the morning. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. Looks like we’ll see steady snowfall starting around 7pm on Wednesday, turning to freezing rain at some point Thursday.

Road and Mountain Biking

It is, of course, still too wet to ride Post, Hospital or Whoopdee. Syncline is a maybe. It’s time to start thinking about freeze-thaw conditions. Once we dip below freezing, you should stop riding the trails if the temperature is above freezing. Feel free to ride where the trails stay frozen, but freeze-thaw conditions make the trails delicate and susceptible to damage.

Upcoming Events

Happy Sunday. There’s by-donation yoga at 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm in Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm. Coming up next Saturday, Dirty Fingers has their annual Santa pub crawl. Meet at the shop at 5pm next Saturday dressed as Santa.

Have an awesome day today!
