Sunday. Snow for the mountain.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s another nice spring day on Mt. Hood: cloudy, snowy, windy… Expect the same all day today, and all this week for that matter. The snow level today will be 4000′ early, 4500′ this afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight. About .3” WV falls during the day, for 2-3” of heavy new snow. Another .8” falls tonight, for 6-8” of additional higher quality snow. Wind today will be SW 30 all day long.

Looking at Monday through Thursday, Timberline is the only resort running lifts. Meadows would rather you not go hiking there, but you are allowed to hike Monday through Wednesday. I’m thinking the avy danger is going to be pretty high, so be careful. Anyway, heavy snowfall continues on Monday. The snow level will be 2500′ early and 5000′ in the afternoon and evening. Models currently show 1” WV during the day, for 9-12” of snow. Another .2” WV falls overnight, for another couple inches of snow. Wind Monday will be SW 15 early, becoming NW 15 in the afternoon and evening.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued

Tuesday starts off with a brief period of clear sky but quickly turns cloudy. We’ll see either wet snow or a mix of rain and snow overnight. The snow level will be 5000′ during the day, 6000′ in the evening, and 3500′ after midnight. About .7” WV falls between 2pm Tuesday and 5am Wednesday. That’s probably going to give us 3-4” of snow mixed with rain. Wind on Tuesday will start at NW 10 and rise steadily to W 40 after midnight.

Wednesday brings steady orographic (terrain-enhanced) snowfall. The snow level will be 3500′ all day, dropping to 1500′ or less after midnight. Approximately .4” WV falls during the day, for 4” of new snow. Another .5” falls overnight, for 5-6” of dry snow. Wind on Wednesday will be W 40 early and W 30 from 1pm on. Thursday also brings significant snowfall.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have light west wind this morning with a light westerly gradient. As a trough of low pressure sits over us for most of the day, there won’t be much change int his situation. After 3pm, however, the wind will pick up to gusty 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier and gusty 14-17 from Rowena east to Arlington. River flow is 358kcfs at The Dalles and river temp is 49 degrees.

Monday sees a weather system move through followed by brief high pressure ridging off the coast. That scenario starts us off with light and variable wind through early afternoon. As we see the weather system move through around 2 or 3pm, the wind will pick up to 10-13 in the western Gorge and 15-18 from Mosier to Arlington. Late in the evening, say from 6pm on, the wind will rise to 20-23 from Rowena to Arlington.

Tuesday looks like another day of weather systems. We’ll start off with widespread west wind at 10-13. A frontal system approaches in the afternoon and gives us a short-lived bump of stronger wind between 4pm and 7pm or so (that’ll probably change). The westerlies should pick up to 22-25 east of The Dalles, but it’s probably not going to be worth chasing them.

Random Morning Thoughts

We humans are very complex creatures. In one moment we shine like stars, and in the next moment we impact others with the gravity and darkness of a black hole. We are inconsistent and fallible, charming and suave one moment and clumsy the next. Despite knowing this, we tend to fixate on the ways we aren’t meeting our high internal standard of self.

Our moments of shame outweigh our moments of triumph, at least in our own minds. This is due, in part, to puritanical notions about not being prideful. It’s also due to an internal negativity bias that encourages us to improve in order to survive.

If we become more self-aware, we can shift the natural tendency to focus on the negative. This allows us to see ourselves in a brighter light. We can intensify, with awareness, the moments of best-self and hold the lesser moments with compassion and humor. In so doing, we raise our overall level of self-love and acceptance. We’re all just a bunch of messed up, perfect humans. It’s impossible to be anything else. Have an awesome day.
